WHEREAS, CAT Sports, Inc. will conduct the Rud tight TI.S. Triathlon on May 1, 1988; and WHEREAS, sairi event is expected to attract approximately 1,500 participants and 4,000 spectators, and will consist of a 1 mile swim, a 25 mile bike race and a 6.2 mile run and; WHEREAS, certain streets and portions thereof should be closed to through vehicular traffic on the specified date and Suring the specified hours to ensure the safety of participants and spectators during said event; and WHEREAS, the event sponsor and the Department of Police have designed the race courses such that major thoroughfares will remain partially open to vehicular traffic, thereby minimizing traffic disruption, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. In order to effectuate safe passage (luring the Bud Light U.S. Triathlon Series, the following streets and/or portions thereof are hereby closed to through vehicular traffic from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on May 1, 1988 as specified below: Biscayne Boulevard from Northeast Six Street to Northeast Thirteenth Street. Northeast Thirteenth Street from Biscayne Boulevard to North Miami Avenue. CITY CGPdMISSLON MEETING OF APR 14 1988 SOLUTION NO. MARKS A 4 Miami Avenue from Northeast Thirteenth Street to Southeast Tenth Street. Southwest Fifth Street from South Miami Avenue to Southwest F ret Avenue. Southwest Fifteenth Road from South Mimi Avenue to Brickell Avenue. South Miami Avenue from South Fifteenth Road to South Twentyfifth Road. Brickell Avenue from Southeast Tenth Street to Southeast Twentyfith Road. Southeast Tenth Street from Brickell Avenue to South Miami Avenue. Southwest First Avenue from Southwest Fifth Street to Southwest Fifteenth Road. Southeast First Street from South Miami Avenue to Southeast F rst Avenue. East First Avenue from Southeast First Street to Northeast Eleventh Street. Included in the herein closure are all streets, avenues, alleys, ways and thoroughfares which intersect the enumerated areas delineated in this Section. Section 2. Such closing of streets is subject to State approval and issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services. Said permit from the Department of Police is to be issued upon full approval of the Chief of Police after giving all due consideration to the safety and traffic needs of residents, businesses, and religious institutions in the area for entering and crossing through said arterials and upon the favorable exercise of the City Manager's judgement predicated upon all factors set forth herein. Section 3. Such closing are hereby conditioned upon the organizers paying for all costs of City services associated with said event and the requirement that the City be insured against any potential liability. It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution authorizing the closure of certain streets for the Bud Light U.S. Triathlon Series to be held May 1, 1989, subject to the issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services. SACKOROtIND s The Department of Community Development has prepared the appropriate legislation in connection with the Bud Light U.S. Triathlon Series. City staff from this department, and that of Police, Fire and Parks and Recreation have been working with officials of CAT Sports, Inc. to coordinate preparations for the second Btxi Light U.S. Triathlon Series, to be held on May 1, 1988 in Miami, The Triathlon will consist of a 1 mile swim, a 25 mile bicycle race and a 6.2 mile run. Bicentennial Park will serve as Triathlon headquarters and the transition area for participants between segments. Organizers expect 1500 participants and 4000 spectators. Police and the organizers have designed the courses so as to ensure the safety of participants while minimizing traffic disruption. Attachments (1) Resolution R8-:31:
