A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE LAW DAY RUN 1988
TO BE CONDUCTED BY THE GREATER MIAMI RUNNING
ASSOCIATION ON MAY 1, 1988, CLOSING CERTAIN
STREETS TO THROUGH VEHICULAR TRAFFIC, SUBJECT
TO THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS BY THE DEPARTMENT
OF POLICE AND FIRE, RESCUE AND INSPECTION
SERVICES; CONDITIONED UPON THE ORGANIZERS
PAYING FOR TU E NECESSARY COSTS OF CITY
SERVICES ASSOCIATED WITH SAID EVENT AND THE
REQUIREMENT THAT THE CITY BE INSURED AGAINST
ANY POTENTIAL LIABILITY.
WHEREAS, the Greater Miami Running Association will conduct
the Law Day Run 1988 on May 1, 1988; and
WHEREAS, said event is expected to attract approximately 500
participants, and will consist of a road race; and
WHEREAS, certain streets and portions thereof should be
closed to through vehicular traffic on the specified date and
during the specified hours to ensure the safety of participants
and spectators during said event; and
WHEREAS, the event sponsor and the Department of Police have
designed the race courses such that major thoroughfares will
remain partially open to vehicular traffic, thereby minimizing
traffic disruption;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. In order to effectuate safe passage during the
Law Day Run 1988, the following streets and/or portions thereof
are hereby closed to through vehicular traffic from 7:00 a.m. to
10:30 a.m. on May 1, 1988, as specified below:
Westernmost northbound lane of Biscayne Boulevard from East
Flagler Street to Southeast Second Street.
Southeast Second Street from Biscayne Boulevard to Brickell
Avenue.
Brickell Avenue from Southeast Second Street to Southeast
Fifteen Road.

Southeast Eighth Street from Brickell Avenue to South_
Bayshore Drive.
South Bayshore Drive from Southeast Eighth Street to
Southeast Fifteenth Road.
Southeast Fifteenth Road from South Bayshore Drive to
Brickell Avenue.
Southeast Fourth Street from Brickell Avenue to Biscayne
Boulevard.
Chopin Plaza from Biscayne Boulevard to Bayfront Park
Baywalk.
Section 2. Such closing of streets is subject. to State
approval and issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and
Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services. Said permit from the
Department of Police is to be issued upon full approval of the
Chief of Police after giving all due consideration to the safety
and traffic needs of residents, businesses and religious
institutions in the area for entering and crossing through said
arterials and upon the favorable exercise of the City Manager's
judgment predicated upon all factors set_ forth herein.
Section 3. Such closings are hereby conditioned upon the
organizers paying for all costs of City services associated with
said event and the requirement that the City be insured against
any potential liability.

ENCLOSURES April 14, 1988
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution authorizing the closure of certain streets for
the Law Day Run 1988 to be held May 1, 1988, subject to the issuance
of permits by the Departments of Police and Fire, Rescue and
Inspection Services.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Community Development has prepared the appropriate
legislation in connection with the Law Day Run 1988. City staff
from this department, and that of Police, Fire and Parks and
Recreation have been working with officials of the Greater Miami
Running Association to coordinate preparations for the Law Day Run
1988, to be held on May 1, 1988 in downtown Miami.
Police and the organizers have designed the courses so as to ensure
the safety of participants while minimizing traffic disruption.
