E. Church South joined with other women in the Black community to organize the Friendship Garden and Civic Club. Mrs. Annie M. Coleman was its president for 25 years. One of the first projects they undertook was to fill the need for a public library in the Black community. Finding a suitable location was a problem and Mrs. Coleman offered the free use of a small building, formerly a grocery store, next to her home. Volunteers repaired and painted the building. Many people donated books and Dunbar Library came into being at 2059 N. W. 6 Court. It became a center of social activity and the rear lawn was used for Saturday aftemoon story hours for the children. In 1938 it became the Dunbar Branch Library, officially incorporated into the City of Miami Library System. When the previous space became inadequate, Mr. D. A. Dorsey donated land for a new library: The Friendship Garden and Civic Club launched a fund raising campaign with the Washington Heights Association to build the library. In November of 1941 the new Dorsey Memorial Branch Library was dedicated. It was the first city -owned building built expressly for library purposes. In 1961 the Dorsey Memorial Branch moved to new and larger quarters in the Dixie Park area and the name was changed accordingly to Dixie Park Branch Library. In 1983, by a resolution of the County Commission, the name became Culmer/Overtown Branch Library, in keeping with the policy of naming branch libraries to reflect their geographic locations. Instrumental in this change was the Rev. Jonathan Rolle of Overtown who approached the County Commission requesting a revision in the name. 149-5Ff; }
