Dear Mr. Perez-Lugones:
This letter shall serve as a formal request for representatives
of the South Florida Coalition for a Free South Africa, to appear
on the agenda of the June 9, 1988, Miami City Commission meeting.
Specifically, the Coalition seeks to address two issues at the
June 9, 1988, City Commission meeting. First, the Coalition is
seeking a waiver to the present city ordinance and policy
requiring the payment_of a minimum of $500 to use the ampitheatre
area of Bayfront Park. The Coalition is planning a public rally
on June 25, 1988, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., to commemerate Nei -son
Mandela, the imprisoned leader of the South African people. At
such rally, we will have speakers, both local and national, :•,ho
will speak on the need for change of our nation's policy toward
South Africa, and cultural entertainment, including African music
and dance.
The Coalition would like to have the rally at Bayfront Park. Its
facilties and natural beauty would serve as an ideal setting for
this important event. Unfortunately, the present City policy
requires a payment of a minimum of $500 to use the park. We
simply cannot afford the fee and unless it is waived, we will not
be able to hold the evt_nt at Bayfront. Our organization is a
community based group which relies on the contributions of its
members for its financial support and does not have an income
which can support the payment of the present fee.
Second, at the June 9 meeting, we will be asking the City
Commission to declare June 25, 1988, "Nelson Mandela Day." ;•7e
will be asking our city government to commemerate Nelson Mandela
for his leadership and courage and join in the world-wide outcry
against the racist system of apartheid in South Africa.
