The Hispanic -American Lyric Theatre, Inc. was established to present
the rich musical treasury of lyric theatre, be it opera, operetta or
zarzuela.
Our first concert took place on October 22, 1986 at the University of
Miami's Koubek Center Auditorium. The title of the proproma was "An
aveninq of Zarzuelas" and it was a great success. Media coverage was
excellent and the 200 seat auditorium had standing room only)
On November 26 the program was repeated at the Church of the Little
Flower, Coral Gables, however this time opretta selections were
added to the program. On December 31, 1986 we were incorporated as
a non-profit organization, and in July, 1987 we were granted tax-
exempt status, 501(c)3 from the IRS.
Thanks to a $1,200 grant from thee Cultural Affairs Council, a third
concert was held at the Koubek Center, featuring scenes from "Los"
Gavilanes", "El Huesped del Sevillano","Marina" and "Naughty Marietta"
Two Americans and three Hispanic singers performed to a capacity
audience made up of Anglos and Hispanics.
On Sept. 25th our fourth concert was held at the Morgan Music Studio
with bass Gustavo Halley and mezzo-soprano Sarah Schumann -Halley. This
fund-raising event provided an opportunity for both outstanding singers
to travel to Europe and audition at major opera houses there. Mr.Halley
is appearing this season with the Greater Miami Opera.
Sponsored by the Metro -Dade Cultural Affairs Council and Hoover Indus-
tries, the first concert of the 1988 season was held at the Miami Sr.
High Auditorium. The program featured scenes from well known zarzuelas
and highlights from Lehar's masterpiece, "Giuditta". The success of
this last work prompted us to present "The Music of Franz Lehar" on
Friday, June 3,1988 at the Koubek Center Auditorium.
The Hispanic -American Lyric Theatre also took part in the organization
of the "Ferias de Andalucia".held in April at the gardens of the Hialeah
Race Track. For 1989 our organization will coordinate the fair which
will take place during the first week of Feb. 1989.
