HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-88-0895r J-88-l40 10/6/88 RESOLUTION NO. 98--895 A RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE 17TH ANNUAL COCONUT GROVE BIKE RACE TO BE CONDUCTED BY THE COCONUT GROVE BICYCLE CLUB, INC. ON OCTOBER 16, 1988, PROVIDING FOR THE CLOSURE OF DESIGNATED STREETS TO THROUGH VEHICULAR TRAFFIC SUBJECT TO THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS BY THE DEPARTMENTS OF POLICE AND FIRE, RESCUE AND INSPECTION SERVICES; CONDITIONED UPON THE ORGANIZERS PAYING FOR THE NECESSARY COSTS OF CITY SERVICES ASSOCIATED WITH SAID EVENT AND THE REQUIREMENT THAT THE CITY WILL BE INSURED AGAINST ANY POTENTIAL LIABILITY. WHEREAS, the Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. will conduct the 17th Annual coconut Grove Bike Race on Sunday, October 16, 1988; and WHEREAS, certain streets must be closed to through vehicular traffic during specified dates and hours to insure the safety of the participants and pedestrians attending this event; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. In order to effectuate safe passage during the 17th Annual Coconut Grove Bike Race to be conducted by the Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc., the following streets are hereby closed to through vehicular traffic from 7:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. on Sunday, October 16, 19881 Grand Avenue from Mary Street to McDonald Street Commodore Plaza from Grand Avenue to Main Highway Main Highway from Charles Avenue to McFarlane Road McFarlane Road from Main Highway to South Bayshore Drive South Bayshore Drive from McFarlane Road to Mary Street Mary Street from South Bayshore Drive to Oak Avenue Included in the herein closure are all streets, avenues, alleys, ways and thoroughfares which intersect the enumerated areas delineated in this Section. CITY COMMISSION MEETING OF OCT 6 " Section 2. Such closing of streets is subject to State approval and issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services. Said permit from the Department of Police is to be issued upon the full approval of the Chief of Police after giving all due consideration to the safety and traffic needs of residents, businesses and religious institutions in the area for entering and crossing through said arterials and upon the favorable exercise of the City Manager's judgement predicated upon all factors set forth herein. Section 3. Such closures are hereby conditioned upon the organizers paying for all costs of City services associated with said event and the requirement that the City be insured against any potential liability. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption pursuant to law. Commission Agenda Item City Manager September 8, 1988 RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended that the City Cowai.ssion adopt the attached resolution authorizing street closures in connection with the 17th Annual Coconut Grove Bike Race to be conducted by the Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. on Sunday, October 16, 1988. BACKGROUND: The Department of Community Development has prepared the appropriate legislation which authorizes the closure of certain streets for the 17th Annual Coconut Grove Bike Race to he conducted by the Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. on Sunday, October 16, 1988, in the Coconut Grove area. The Police Department has approved a course that will minimize traffic disruption. This event was discussed by Joe Avalos, organizer of the race, at a recent meeting held with the Coconut Grove homeowners associations and civic groups.
