Lopez 3200 Grand Avenue j Coconut Grove, FL 33133 January 24, 1989 : The Honorable Xavier Suarez Mayor of the City of Miami City Hall Miami, Florida r Dear Mr. Mayor: Today, while driving to visit a friend who lives in Coconut Grove, I came - across the barricades, that were'put.there_by the city to close the ,street 4 Not only Aviation Street was barricaded but all the streets leading to that { side of the Grove were closed. I had to drive to Tigertail to get to Jeff- ?. erson.' I am outraged that this action has been taken. I believe that the streets belong to the people and, unless there is a real good reason, they should be,open to be used by all the people. I know that there is a group of res- idents who live in that area who would like to have semiprivate streets. a3: They are the ones that have pushed this through and nothing could be more Al unfair. My three friends who,are residents of that neighborhood all agree with me, it's a very bad idea. Now I would like to point out a few things to you. Besides my inconvenience you are forcing all residents who live in the north part of the Grove to use Tigertail or Bayshore. For years those two streets have suffered from overuse and abuse; how doyouthink the residents who live on Tigertail-are going to feel with more traffic? They pay taxes too. There is also` -the mat- -' ter of police, fire rescue, and emergency vehicles which will be affected = by this action. Sometimes those -extra few minutes it takes.to go around could me an.that some person in desperate need of immediate rescueassistance would have to wait more.time. A fire in someone's home could burro a.little longer ,tom because the streets are closed. A police emergency could.be adversely affec-. ted,because_'a few residents want semiprivate streets! Time, even seconds ,are precious under those 'circumstances.'`It's'dj t''a bad move on the "city' part. You are forcing all residents who need access to grocery stores, shops etc. N3 or who have other business in the commercial part of .the Grove to go ,out of their way._ Y In closing Mr. Mayor I would like to say I also don't like traffic on my street' who does? But I would never take any action to deny anyone the right ful..use of my street. If the barricades are left standing, and the streets =` are permanently closed, you can bet that on election day anyone responsible for this will not get my vote. My family and I also own the property next door located at 3675 Douglas Road. I am in opposition to the barricading of Loquat and Kumquat Avenues at Douglas Road. First, I would like to tell my f` neighbors that I sympathize with their problem of the intrusion of undesirable traffic on Loquat and Kumquat Avenues. This is a problem of epidemic proportions which inflict residents all over the City of Miami and Dade.County. _ On Palmetto Avenue and Douglas Roads residents suffer from the intrusion of speeding motorists, thus endangering the - lives of our families, pets, and plantlife. By barricading y= Loquat and Kumquat Avenues, obviously Palmetto Avenue.and 2 other neighboring streets will then receive an increase in traffic and have the same problem. , '-. Everyone wants to live on a barricaded street, yet no one wants to live on the street that will take the burden of `the f traffic. Unless we barricade all the streets in,the_surrounding a* {' area, no one will be happy. Even then, traffic`'wiTl over ow into other residential streets. As an ,alternative to barricades, -1 suggest the following;; 1. Decreasing ;y and enforcing the speed limit to 15 or'20 m.p.h.p on all residential``" streets in the Cit of Miami. ri4 2.
