The Florida Department of Education (DOE) has again selected Metro --Dade County as the agency responsible for the selection of the vendor who will supply these meals under a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Program. Other local agencies participating in the USDA/DOE program are covered under the "umbrella" bid conducted for the Summer Food Program by Metro -Dade County. The "invitation to bid" document prepared by Dade County is reviewed and approved by DOE for conformance with the rules and regulations promulgated by USDA. For example, the lunch menu must meet USDA's strict nutritional requirements. 89-352 I Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission Page 2 Preparation of our own bid document would be an arduous task requiring approval of DOE. Also, it is expected that the rate per meal will be lower if the City participates in Dade County's "umbrella" bid. All operational and administrative expenses will be paid by the USDA. As in past years, the City Commission will be given the opportunity to review and approve the County's recommendation for award of bid. An Ordinance appropriating USDA funds for the operation of the program is also being presented for City Commission action as a companion item. W'`r
