RESOLUTION NO. S9-X'20 ;
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING MIAMI BUD LIGHT U.S.
TRIATHLON TO BE CONDUCTED BY CAT SPORTS, INC.
ON MAY 21, 1989, PROVIDING FOR THE CLOSURE OF
DESIG14ATED STREETS TO THROUGH VEHICULAR
TRAFFIC SU13JECT TO THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS BY
THE DEPARTMENTS OF POLICE AND FIRE, RESCUE AND
INSPECTION SERVICE; FURTHER CONDITIONED UPON
THE REQUIREMENT THAT THE CITY WILL BE INSURED
AGAINST ANY POTENTIAL LIABILITY AND UPON
ORGANIZERS PAYING FOR ALL NECESSARY COSTS OF
CITY SERVICES.
WHEREAS, CAT Sports, Inc. will conduct the Miami Bud Light
U.S. Triathlon Series on May 21, 1989; and
WHEREAS, said event is expected to attract approximately
1,500 athletes and 3,000 spectators, and will consist of a 1.5K
swim, 40K bike and 10K run; and
WHEREAS, certain streets and portions thereof should be
closed to through vehicular traffic on the specified date and
during the specified hours to ensure the safety of participants
and spectators during said event;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. In order to effectuate safe passage during the
Miami Bud Light U.S. Triathlon Series to be conducted by CAT
Sports, Inc. the following streets are hereby closed to through
vehicular traffic from 7:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on May 21, 1989 as
specified below:
Biscayne: Boulevard from Northeast Sixth Street to Northeast
Thirteenth Street.
Northeast Thirteenth Street from Biscayne Boulevard to North.
Miami Avenue.
Miami Avenue from Northeast Thirteenth Street to Southeast
Tenth Street.
Southwest Fifth Street from South Miami Avenue -to Southwest
First Avenue.

South Miami Avenue from South Fifteenth Road to South
Twenty-fifth Roa(3.
Brickell Avenue from Southeast Tenth Street to Southeast
Twenty --fifth Road.
Southeast Tenth Street from Brickell Avenue to South Miami
Avenue.
Southwest First Avenue from Southwest Fifth Street to
Southwest Fifteenth Road.
Southeast First Street from South Miami Avenue to Southeast
First Avenue.
East First Avenue from Southeast First Street to Northeast
Eleventh Street.
Included in the herein closure are all streets,
avenues, alleys, ways and thoroughfares which intersect
the enumerated areas delineated in this Section.

Section 2. Such closing of streets is subject to State
approval and issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and

Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services. Said permit from the
Department of Police is to be issued upon full approval of the
"i Chief of Police after giving all due consideration to the safety
and traffic needs of residents, businesses, and religious
institutions in the area for entering and crossing through said
arterials and upon the favorable exercise of the City Manager's
judgement predicated upon all factors set forth herein.
Section 3. Such authorizations are hereby subject to the
organizers obtaining insurance requirements as mandated by the
City of Miami and paying for all necessary costs of City
services.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon the its adoption pursuant to law.

RECOMMENDATION:
-' It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution authorizing the closure of certain streets
9 in connection with the USTS Triathlon to be conducted by Cat
=I Sports, Inc. on May 21, 1989. The street closures are subject to
_ the issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and Fire,
Rescue and Inspection Services and upon the organizers paying for
—j all the necessary costs of City Services.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Community Development has prepared the
appropriate legislation for the above mentioned authorization for
the Bud -Light U.S. Triathlon to be conducted by Cat Sports, Inc.
on May 21, 1989.

This organization has met with the Police Department and the
route for the parade has been approved conditioned upon City
Commission's authorization.

The Miami Bud -Light U.S. Triathlon Series consist of a swim,
40K bike and 10K run completed by an individual or a.s a team. A
total of 1,500 athletes will be participating and 3,000
spectators are el:pected . 'Phis event has been produced for the
last two years in Miami and receives substantial media exposure.
