HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-89-0399J-89-558 4/27/89 RESOLUTION NO. S9, -399 . 0 A RESOLUTION GRANTING A REQUEST BY REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CARVER DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND THE ST. JOHN'S COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION FOR A 90-DAY EXTENSION PROHIBITING THE DEMOLITION OF THE CARVER HOTEL LOCATED AT 833 NORTHWEST THIRD AVENUE, A/K/A 899 NORTHWEST THIRD AVENUE, MIAMI, FLORIDA; REQUIRING THAT SAID PARTIES SUBMIT A COMPLETE FINANCING PLAN TO THE CITY WITHIN SAID 90-DAY PERIOD; AND FURTHER REQUIRING THAT AN INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT BE EXECUTED AND INSTRUCTING THE CITY ATTORNEY TO DRAFT AN APPROPRIATE INDEMNIFICATION AGREEMENT IN CONNECTION WITH THIS PROJECT. WHEREAS, the representatives of the Carver Development Corporation and the St. John's Community Corporation have expressed great concern in not demolishing an important site; and WHEREAS, the representatives have stated that they are in the process of obtaining monies to repair the Carver Hotel; and WHEREAS, the City Commission believes it, is in the best interest of the public to grant a 90-day extension prohibiting the demolition of the Carver Hotel; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The Carver Hotel, located at 833 N.W. Third Avenue a/k/a 899 Northwest Third Avenue, Miami, Florida, more _ particularly described as Lot 10, Block 35, MIAMI NORTH, as sI' recorded in Plat Book B at Page 41 of the Public Records of Dade County, Florida, shall not be demolished for 90 days from the `` date of this Resolution. The persons representing the Carver Development Corporation and the St. John's Community Development Corporation or their agents shall submit a. complete financing plan to the City Commission within said 90-day period. Section 3. Within such 90-day period, said persons as individuals and as representatives of said corporations, and the owner of the subject property, Ada Mae Paschall., shall execute an agreement, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, concerning the subject property which indemnifies the City of Miami. Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption pursuant to law. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 27th day of �� A j"1 1989. FLORIDA 33130 (305) 545-4228 record IIl comic-ClIjoll writh lteffi OI) c7 f:y Hirai Cit17- Clerl; RES=ON IN SUPPORT OF THE PRESERVATION AMID REHABILITATION OF THE CARVER HOTEL WHMEAS, the Carver Hotel is one of the few remaining and most signif- icant buildings associated with Overtown's heyday as a center of social and entertainment life for the black comninity in Miami, and WEREAS, there are presently plans to rehabilitate this structure and bring it back as a vital part of the new emerging Overtown area, NOW, MEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Dade County Historic Preserva- tion Board supports the efforts of the Carver Development Corporation and the Saint John's Comnamity Development Corporation to rehabilitate this significant structure, and encourages the City of Miami Commission to delay the demolition order and facilitate in any way possible the work of these organizations in securing the appropriate financing to make the preserva- tion of the Carver Hotel possible.
