WHEREAS, it is only fitting to demonstrate appreciation In behalf of all citizens of the City of Miami for Father Felix Varela's Inspiration to the Cuban people; and WHEREAS, this year is the two hundredth anniversary of his birth; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings set forth in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and Incorporated herein as If fully set forth In this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby codesignates Northwest 17 Street between Northwest 27 Avenue and Northwest 37 Avenue, Miami, Florida,'as "Father Felix Varela Street". Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this resolution to the United States Postal Authority, the Traffic and Transportation Section of the Metropolitan Dade County Public Works Department, the City of Miami Police Department, Public Works Department and Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services Department. ENCLOSURES At your request, our office has made several attempts to ascertain from Metro -Dade Public Works Department when the above -cited codesignation signs would be installed. Yesterday, a member of my staff happened to pass by NW 17_ s . Street and noticed that a codesignation sign was already in place. As you will see from the enclosed copy of a letter from _ the Director of Metro -Dade Public Works Department, there must have been an oversight in their Department. ` This' memorandum is being sent to you for informational " purposes only. October 23, 1.989 TILE: SURIEC:T_ Resolution 89-555, passed and adopted 6/7/89 REFERENCES ENCLOSURES: Reference the above -cited City Commission Resolution requesting the County to co -designate NW 17th Street from NW 27th Avenue to NW 37th Avenue as "Father Felix Varela Street". A copy of the Resolution was sent to Mr. Walter A. Herndon of Metro -Dade Public Works Department, Traffic & Transportation Section on June 23rd. In September, I received a request from Vice Mayor De Yurre's office to find out when the signs would be installed as interested parties wanted to hold a small ceremony at the time of installation. I contacted Mr. Herndon's office and was transferred to a Mr. Russell Kelly who said he did not think they had received our letter containing the Resolution. On September 28th, another copy of the Resolution was sent to Mr. Herndon, requesting that he inform us of the proposed installation date. Last week, as we still had not heard from Mr. Herndon's office, I again telephoned. This time I was transferred to Mr. Pete Hernandez who informed me that the Director of Public Works would shortly be writing a letter setting out the new policy on co -designation of streets. This would involve a $400 fee to be paid to the County for each co -designation. BACKGROUND A group of citizens representing "Comite Pro-Rescale de Raices y Monumentos Historicos Cubanos en el Mundo" have requested that N.W. 17 Street between N.W. 27 Avenue and N.W. 37 Avenue be codeslgnated in honor of Father Felix Varela. Father Felix Varela was a Cuban who lived In exile In the United States and never returned to Cuba while It was under the domain of the Spanish colonists. He was an Inspiration to the Cuban people. This year Is the 200th anniversary of his birth.
