COORDINATING BODY OF THE SERIES OF SPECIAL
EVENTS, FESTIVALS, CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL
ACTIVITIES TO BE HELD IN THE GREATER MIAMI
AREA TO COMMEMORATE THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF
THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA IN A YEAR -LONG
JUBILEE FROM OCTOBER 12, 1991 UNTIL
OCTOBER 12, 1992 AND ENCOURAGING THE OTHER
MUNICIPALITIES OF DADE COUNTY TO DO THE SAME.
WHEREAS, the Discovery of America Quincentennial Committee,
Inc. (the "Committee") was created and registered as a not -for -
profit corporation by a group of outstanding members of our
community of diverse ethnic backgrounds an cultures under the
leadership of Carlos Arboleya; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Committee is to coordinate in
Dade County a series of celebrations and activities commemorating
the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America in a year -long
jubilee from October 12, 1991 until October 12, 1992; and

WHEREAS, the Committee wishes to plan, coordinate, develop

and encourage a series of cultural and historical activities,
festivals and special events produced by resident organizations
from October 12, 1991 until October 1992; and
WHEREAS, the Committee wishes to foster and promote the
Greater Miami area as the "CENTER OF THE AMERICAS" for these
celebrations and, considering the unique geographical location,
to involve and invite our neighbors of this Hemisphere to
commemorate on our shores this memorable moment, and sharing with
us their cultural and historical background; and
WHEREAS, the Committee wishes to portray the Greater Miami
area as desirable for tourists on a national and international
level through a promotional campaign of the above mentioned
activities; and

WHEREAS, the Committee wishes to encourage unity and
positive cultural awareness of the quincentennary of the
discovery of America among the residents of the Greater Miami;
and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami
wishes to express its support and encouragement of the activities
of the Committee;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The City of Miami hereby recognizes the
Discovery of America Quincentennial Committee, Inc. as the
coordinating body of the series of special events, festivals,
cultural and historical activities to be held in the Greater
Miami area to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery
of America in a year -long jubilee from October 12, 1991 until
October 12, 1992 and encourages the other municipalities of Dade
County to do the same.
Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption pursuant to law.
