A RESOLUT1014 CONCERNING THE 18TH ANNUAL GREAT
COCONUT GROVE BICYCLE RACE TO BE CONDUCTED BY
THE COCONUT GROVE BICYCLE CLUB, INC. ON
OCTOBER 1, 1989, PROVIDING FOR THE CLOSURE OF
DESIGNATED STREETS TO THROUGH VEHICULAR
TRAFFIC SUBJECT TO THE ISSUANCE OF PERMITS BY
THE DEPARTMENTS OF POLICE AND FIRE, RESCUE AND
INSPECTION SERVICES; CONDITIONED UPON THE
ORGANIZERS PAYING FOR THE NECESSARY COSTS OF
CITY SERVICES ASSOCIATED WITH SAID EVENT AND
THE REQUIREMENT THAT THE CITY WILL BE INSURED
AGAINST ANY POTENTIAL LIABILITY.
WHEREAS, the Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. will conduct
the 18th Annual Great Coconut Grove Bicycle Race on Sunday,
October 1, 1989; and
WHEREAS, certain streets must be closed to through vehicular
traffic during specified dates and hours to insure the safety of
the participants and pedestrians attending this event;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. In order to effectuate safe passage during the
18th Annual Great Coconut Grove Bicycle Race to be conducted by
the Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc., the following streets are
hereby closed to through vehicular traffic, as follows:
Saturday, September 30, 1989 for trial run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m..
South Miami Avenue from Southwest Fifteenth Road to
Southwest Twenty-fifth Road.
Sunday, October 1, 1989 from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.:
Grand Avenue from Mary Street to Commodore Plaza.
Commodore Plaza from Grand Avenue to Main Highway.
Main Highway from Charles Avenue to McFarlane Road.
McFarlane Road from Main Highway to South Bayshore Drive.
South Bayshore Drive from McFarlane Road to Mary Street.
Mary Street from South Bayshore Drive to Oak Avenue.

tncluded in the herein closure are all streets, avenues,
alleys, ways and thoroughfares which intersect the
enumerated areas delineated in this Section.
Section 2. Such closing of streets is subject to State
approval and issuance of permits by the Departments of Police and
Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services. Said permit from the
Department of Police is to be issued upon the full approval of
the Chief of Police after giving all due consideration to the
safety and traffic needs of residents, businesses and religious
institutions in the area for entering and crossing through said
arterials and upon the favorable exercise of the City Manager's
judgement predicated upon all factors set forth herein.
Section 3. Such closures are hereby conditioned upon the
organizers paying for all costs of City services associated with
said event and the requirement that the City be insured against
any potential liability.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption pursuant to law.

RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution authorizing street closures in connection with

the 18th Annual Great Coconut Bicycle Race to be conducted by the
Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. on Sunday, October 1, 1989.
BACKGROUND:
=
The Department of Community Development has prepared the appropriate
legislation which authorizes the closure of certain streets for the
18th Annual Great Coconut Grove Bicycle Race to be conducted by the
Coconut Grove Bicycle Club, Inc. on Sunday, October 1, 1989, in the

Coconut Grove area. The organizers are also requesting that South
Miami Avenue be temporarily closed to traffic on Saturday, September
30, 1989 for the trial runs. The organizers have met with the
Special Events Committee and the Police Department has approved a
course that will minimize traffic disruption.
