RESOLUTION NO. 89. 909'
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING "MAKING STRIDES"
AGAINST CANCER TO BE CONDUCTED BY THE AMERICAN
CANCER SOCIETY, FLORIDA DIVISION, INC.-DADE
COUNTY UNIT ON OCTOBER 28, 1989, AUTHORIZING
THE USE OF CERTAIN STREETS, SUBJECT TO THE
ISSUANCE OF PERMITS BY THE DEPARTMENTS OF
POLICE AND FIRE, RESCUE AND INSPECTION
SERVICES; FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT TO CONTROL TRAFFIC FLOW ON SAID
STREETS; CONDITIONED UPON THE ORGANIZERS
PAYING FOR THE NECESSARY COSTS OF CITY
SERVICES ASSOCIATED WITH SAID EVENT AND THE
REQUIREMENT THAT THE CITY BE INSURED AGAINST
ANY POTENTIAL LIABILITY.
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society, Florida Division,
Inc. -Dade County Unit has requested the use of certain streets in
the area of East Second Avenue from Northeast Second Street to
Southeast Second Street and South Miami Avenue from Southeast
Second Street to Southwest 25th Road to conduct a 5-mile walk-a-
thon Saturday, October 28, 1989; and
WHEREAS, the event sponsor and the Department of Police have
designed the race course such that major thoroughfares will
remain partially open to vehicular traffic, thereby minimizing
traffic disruption;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The use of certain streets and thoroughfares in
the area of East Second Avenue from Northeast Second Street to
Southeast Second Street and South Miami Avenue from Southeast
Second Street to Southwest 25th Road on Saturday, October 28,
1989 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. during the
"Making Strides" Against Cancer 5 Mile walk-a-thon to be
conducted by American Cancer Society, Florida Division, Inc. -Dade
County Unit, is hereby authorized, subject to the issuance of
permits by the Departments of Police and Fire, Rescue and
Inspection Services.

Section 2.
The
Police
Department is hereby
authorized
to
control traffic
flow
on the
streets to be utilized
as part of
the
race course.
Section 3. Such authorization is hereby conditioned upon
the organizers paying for all costs of City services associated
with said event and the requirement that the City be insured
against any potential liability.
Section 4. The Resolution shall become effective
immediately upon its adoption.

. It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution authorizing the use of certain streets for
the "Making Strides" Against Cancer 5 Mile Walk-a-thon to be
conducted on Saturday, October 28, 1989 by the American Cancer
Society, Inc.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Community Development has prepared the
appropriate legislation which authorizes the use of certain
streets in connection with the "Making Strides" Against Cancer 5
Mile Walk-a-thon to be conducted by the American Cancer Society,
Florida Division, Inc. -Dade County Unit, on October 28, 1989.
The 5 Mile Walk -a -thou which is cosponsored by Bayside, will be
held in Downtown Miami. Only one lane of traffic will be
temporarily used in the area of East Second Avenue from
Northeast Second Street to Southeast Second Street and South
Miami Avenue from Southeast Second Street to Southwest 25th Road.
The Police Department has approved a course that will minimize
traffic disruption.
