October 11, 1989 Mr. Cesar Odio Manager, City of Miami 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, Florida 33133 RE: "Architecture Week 1989" (Concert in the Park October 27, 1989) ..~ .: ~ Dear Mr. Odio: i The Miami Chapter of the American Institute ..of ...Ar.chit.ects. _ is ~ concluding the process of organizing a major community event scheduled to be held October 27 through November 4, 1989. "Architecture Week" as it is called, will focus on our built I environment while highlighting Miami's positive image. Our kick-off event will be called "Illuminate Miami". This ~ two-part event will include a reception for about 500 ;j guests, to be held on the 33rd floor of the Miami Center °! overlooking Bayfront Park, while a jazz concert will be in `'` progress in the Amphitheater for our community to enjoy. i _''? The concert will be enhanced by a spectacular display of lights and a laser show coordinated by Light-Up Miami, all concluding with a fireworks display by Vitale Fireworks. This will begin a week-long series of programs that will address issues of the inner cities, growth management, historic preservation, urban planning and ,-just ..plain -fun. Enclosed is a schedule of events that gives you an insight into the magnitude and quality of this major event. Also enclosed is a revised budget with income and services received to date. With the exception of Miami: The Evolution of the City and the Beaux Arts Ball, (events co-hosted by the AIA), all other events are free. I have been fortunate to get sponsors for most of the events. However, I need some help from the City of Miami, to make this concert free to the community. I have raised well over $30,000.00 to allow for the free concert and I need the help to get the concert included. 800 D01!GI.AS ENTRANCE • SUITt 119 • CURAL GABLEti, FLORIDA ;i131 • (iQ5) !i8-`488 !~9 _, ,~ M1AM1 CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN Mr. Odio 10/11/89 Page 2 "~1 INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS I respectfully request a waiver of the costs for the use of the Amphitheater estimated at $1,646.00. I also would like to request a reduction of the insurance requirements for the event. Mr. Ira Katz has indicated to me that he has already used the 30 days allotted for non-profit events. Therefore, if there is any other way to get assistance I would certainly appreciate it. The New World of the Arts will provide the music, Light-Up Miami will•provide the special lighting and laser show for that evening and the AIA will provide the fireworks. It would be great if the City of Miami would provide the Amphitheater free of charge. If this matter needs to be brought up before the commission, please place it on th agenda for the October 26, 1989 meeting. I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.
