HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-90-0090J-90-37 12/23/89 RESOLUTION NO. 90-:W90 A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION DESIGNATING AND PROCLAIMING APRIL 22, 1990 AS EARTH DAY 1990 IN THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA, AND SETTING THAT DAY ASIDE FOR PUBLIC ACTIVITIES IN THE COMMUNITY PROMOTING PRESERVATION OF THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT AND LAUNCHING THE "DECADE OF THE ENVIRONMENT". ' WHEREAS, almost twenty years ago, more than twenty million Americans joined together on Earth Day in a demonstration of concern for the environment and their collective action resulted in the passage of sweeping new laws to protect this nation's air,, water, and land; and WHEREAS, in the nineteen years since the first Earth Day, despite environmental improvements, the environmental health of Planet Earth is increasingly endangered, threatened by Global Climate Change, Ozone Depletion, Tropical Deforestation, Ocean Pollution, Toxic Wastes, Desertification, and Nuclear Waste requiring action by all sectors of society; and WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 is a national and international call to action for all citizens to join in a global effort to save this Planet; and WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate all citizens on the importance of acting in an environmentally sensitive fashion by recycling, conserving energy and water, using efficient transportation, and adopting more ecologically sound life-styles; and WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate all citizens on the importance of buying and using only those products least harmful to the environment; and WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will educate all citizens on the importance of doing business only with those companies that are environmentally sensitive and responsible; and CITY cowassion MEETING of FEB .7,�' 1'9y90 SQl1f1'fQl41p" Man. The Miami City Commission hereby designates and proclaims April 22, 1990 as Earth Day 1990 in the City of Miami, Florida, and sets that day aside for public activities in the community promoting preservation of the global environment and launching the "Decade of the Environment". Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 7th day of February .-J990. XAV'IER L.
