I am writing for permission to use city streets for our
Annual Law Day Run, put on by the DCBA Young Lawyers Section and
sponsored by First Union Bank. The application for our race has
been submitted to the Department of Community Development.
The race is part of our Law Week projects, including
programs in the schools and free legal clinics for the needy. Law
Day is a national celebration that originated in the 1950's as a
response to the Soviet Union's displays of military might on that
day. Its purpose is to remind us of the importance of the rule of
law in our society. The Dade County Bar has put on this event for
over ten years, and it was originally run in Coconut Grove.
In the early 19801s, before Bayside Marketplace was
opened, downtown Miami was not a place that was often frequented
outside of normal business hours. In an effort to attract
attention to the positive side of downtown, we moved the race
downtown so South Florida runners and their families could become
more familiar and comfortable. there. Without one cent of
governmental financial support, this event has been a excellent one
for the City of Miami. In fact, each year the race has spent
thousands of dollars on off -duty City of Miami Police officers to
secure the race course. liumerous police agencies have competed
with teams of runners in the Law Day Run.
With the merger of our sponsor Florida National Bank with
First Union, we would like to move this event from Bayfront Park
back to the Grove. The run is scheduled for 8:00 A.M. Sunday April
29th and the last finishers should be through by about 9 A.M. The

inconvenience is minimal, and far outweighed by the benefits of
this healthy event. The Law Day Run has been voted one of the
favorite races of the runners of South Florida.
Please call the police to give them your O.K. for this
event. Feel free to call our race director, attorney David L.
Deehl at 358-9700 if you have any questions. Thank you.
