A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION
CONDITIONALLY RECOGNIZING THE M I AMI
ANNIVERSARY COMMIT -PEE, INC. AS THE
COORDINATING BODY OF THE SERIES OF SPECIAL
EVENTS, FESTIVALS, CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL
ACTIVITIES TO BE HELD IN THE GREATER MIAMI
AREA TO COMMEMORATE THE CENTENNIAL
ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI IN 1996.
WHEREAS, the Miami Anniversary Committee Inc. (t1q
"Committee") was created and registered as a - -prof*
corporation by a group of outstanding member r uni of
diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures er the ad ip of
Anthony Abraham; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Comm e 0 rdinate the
series of celebrations an . viti co emorating the
centennial anniversary of fo ing o City of Miami in
1996; and
WHEREAS, the Co tee wish to Zan, coordinate, develop
and encourage a se s of cu ral and historical activities,
festivals and s ial ents p uced by organizations; and
WHEREA the Commi shes to portray the Greater Miami
area as de for ourists on a national and international
leve�rough a_ pr ional campaign of the above mentioned

WHEREAS, the Conunittee wishes to relieve the City of Miami
the financial burdens of this annual community event; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Miami wishes to
express its support and encouragement of the activities of the
Committee;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMTSSTON or THE CITY
OF MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section 1. Subject to the following conditions, the
Miami City Commission hereby recognizes the Miami Anniversary
Committee, Inc. as the coordinating body for the series of
special events, festivals and cultural and historical activiti
to be held in the Greater Miami Area to commemorat he
centennial anniversary of the founding of the City of M in
1996:
1. the City shall not provide funding;
2. the Committee's board shall be ethnically se;
3. the City of Miami shall be p to the
Committee;
4. the organizers shall produ suc ful ual events;
and
5. the Committee sha audited financial
statements relateA%,L ea vent to the City.
Section 2.

RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution recognizing the Miami Anniversary Committee, Tnc.
as the coordinating body of a series of special events, festivals,
cultural and historical activities to be held in the Greater Miami
area to commemorate the anniversary of the founding; of the City of
riiami .

As a result of the City Commission's directive to the administration
to report back_ to the Commission in reference to the proposals of tee
Mlarni Anniversary Conx,,ittee and the Miami World Fair, the ):-rector. of
Community Development met with Matthew Schwartz, Executive 7-rector
.of the Downtown Development Authority, Mr. C. J. Ortiz of the Miami
World Fair and Mr. Hector. Botero, represent4 no the Miami Anniversary
Comm-- ttee, to resolve any possible conflicts concerning_ future events
rlanned by the two (2) organizations.
The two (2) organazatioris have reached an agreement and t"r. . C. J.
Ortiz has withdrawn hi.s objection to the City CommisslonIs
recoynityon of the '11izmi Anniversary Committee as the coordinat_`nG
body of special events commemorating the anniversary of the f.oundinQ_
of the City of t2iami .
Mr. Matthew Schwartz is in the process of setting up meetincts Faith
Mr. C. J. Ortiz and members of the City Commission to review the
world F'air's prof.osal.
The Department of Comnwnity Development is presently working with
representatives of the Miami Anniversary Committee. The oroani`ation
_is asserTibling a tuani of event organizers and fund raisers to obtain
broad community support and corporate financial support. They have
already receivez positive response from several major corporate
sf.onsors and are working with the Dade County School System on a
poster competition program. The Pi -,am.: Anniversary Conunittee is
submitting progress reports tc the Pepart.ment of Community_
Developi-nent on a regular basis.

The Miami. anniversary Committee's plans call for a yearly event on
the City's birthday for the next six years, c�slminatina on tl�e
celebration of the City's centennial on July 28, 1996. Their first
event will be held at Bicentennial Park on July 22, 1990.
If the City Commission approves the designation of Miami Anniversary
Committee, Inc. as the coordinating body of activities related to the
City's centennial celebration, it is recorLmended that such approval
be subject to the following conditions:
1 ) Ido City funding.

organization's board be ethnically diverse.

That
the
City of Miami be represented on the board.
4)
That
the
organizers produce successful annual events.
5)
That
the
group provide to the City aud,ite<i financial
statements
related
to each event.
