HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-90-0249J-90-200 0 3/ 2 2/91) RESOLUTION NO. 90-02 A RESOLUTION APPROVING THE PURCHASE OF A TRANSPORTABLE ROBOT AND ALLOCATING FUNDS THEREFOR, AT A COST NOT TO EXCEED $29,000. FROM THE LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND, SUBJECT TO SUCH COSTS HAVING BEEN APPROVED BY THE CHIEF OF POLICE AND SUBJECT TO COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE CITY CODE PROCUREMENT PROCEDURES. WHEREAS, Florida State Statute 932.704(3)(a), as amended, authorizes the expenditure of forfeiture proceeds for law enforcement purposes not considered normal operating expenses. - and WHEREAS, the City of Miami Police Department continues to have a commitment to the safety and protection of all persons within our city and community; and WHEREAS, the recent outbreak of terrorist attacks and bombings has brought concern and attention to the safety of law enforcement officers, governmental officials and the entire community; and WHEREAS, this Transportable Robot would make the detection of explosive devices safer for both the officers and community at large; and WHEREAS, the Chief of Police has recommended adoption of this Resolution and has determined that the expenditures proposed comply with Florida State Statute 932.704, as amended; and WHEREAS, funds to cover the necessary expenses required for this program are available in the City of Miami Law Enforcement Trust Fund; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. Section 2. The purchase of a Transportable Robot is hereby approved with funds therefor, in an amount not to exceed $29,000, hereby allocated from the City of Miami Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project No. 690001, Index Code 290904-996, subject to compliance with applicable City Code procurement procedures. Odio City Manager ENCLOSURES It is respectfully recommended that a resolution be passed for the purchase of a Transportable Robot at an estimated cost of $29,000. Funding is to be from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department is responsible for responding to calls involving suspicious packages or bomb threats. With the recent outbreak of terrorist attacks and bombings it has become apparent that the officers must use the most efficient means available to determine whether a package is in fact a bomb. The Special Investigations Section/Bomb Squad unit would utilize this Transportable Robot to remotely retrieve, and render safe, explosive devices and/or suspicious devices, with a great degree of safety. This machine would allow the Bomb Squad to perform their assigned task with a greater degree of safety both for the Squad and the public.
