HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-90-0361d --90-:332 RESn1.1JTION No. 90- A RESOL.UTiON DESIGNATING THE CITY OF PANAMA CITY, PANAMA, AS A "SISTER CITY" OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA. WHEREAS, on February 13, 1990, during an official visit to Panama City, Panama, by a City of Miami delegation, the Mayor of that city presented the Mayor of Miami with a formal resolution declaring the City of Miami, Florida, a "Sister City" of Panama City, Panama.; and WHEREAS, common ties of mutual interests exist between �. Panama City and the City of Miami in the areas of culture, trade, and tourism, which justify mutual establishment of a "Sister City" relationship; and WHEREAS, in addition to the benefits flowing from the exchange of the above interests, all of the cultures now reflected within the society of Miami will be enhanced as a result of the herein proposed designation of Panama City as a "Sister City" of the City of Miami; and WHEREAS, there appears to be substantial compliance with the standards for "Sister City" designation as set forth by this Commission in Resolution No. 78-5, adopted January 11, 1978; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: #f CITY COMMISSION MEETIIIG OF MAY 24 1990 RESOLUTiCN N 9 0 3611 N ,Section 1. The City of Panama City, Panama, is hereby formally designated as a "Sister City" of the City of Miami, Florida. Section 2. This Resolution shall become effective immediately after its adoption. Odio REFERENCES: City of Miami, _- Florida City Manager -_- ENCLOSURES: - Recommendation It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached resolution designating Panama City, Panama, a "Sister City" of the City of Miami, Florida. Background Last February 13, 1990, during an official visit to Panama City =1 by a Miami delegation, the Mayor of that city presented the Mayor of Miami with a 'formal resolution declaring the City of Miami a "Sister City" of Panama City. Upon their return to Miami, a group of local residents and business leaders expressed a desire to formalize this relationship, based on the mutual interests that exist between the two cities in the areas of culture, trade and tourism. Plummer Sister Cities Liasion City of Miami Pan American Drive Miami, FL Re: City of Miami - City of Panama Sister Cities Dear Commissioner Plummer: This letter is a formal confirmation of our meeting on Friday, March 30, 1990, during which we stated that the individuals whose names are attached hereto have organized to request that the City of Miami recognize us for the purpose of carrying out a Sister Cities program with the city of Panama, Republic of Panama. 1t is our understanding that a citizen's group presided by Mr. Raul Diaz from the City of Panama is making a parallel request to you at this time.
