Vice Mayor Miller Dawkins Shenan I West Little H yeuc`ie►` Hon. Commissioner Miriam Alonso Homeowners' Association Hon. Commissioner Victor De Yurre Hon. Commissioner J.L. Plummer Subject: Destruction of Black Olives on SW 8th Street (Calla Ocho) We respectfully request: 1) That discussion of the pocket item relating to the removi of black olive trees on SW Sth Street be postponed until 6:00 p.in•= this evening so that the residents of our area may be heard on this., issue. 2) That the Commission instruct the City Manager to immediately cease the destruction of the black olives until discussion betwebri► the Association, the Kiwanis of Little Havana and the City of141 can take place to develop a more constructive solution. s We are opposed to the activities taking place for the following reasons: 1) There is no master plan to replace dead or destroyed Toyal palms OR to maintain any new ones that are planted. (Of the 200 palms claimed to have been planted in the first phase of this; project, less than 100 still stand. At this rate, it is doubtful;' that ANY trees will survive on Calla Ocho if the current plan"' continues. The current phase of this project will replace Na dead q, royal palms. 2) Taxpayers' monies provided for the planting of tie black olives in the first place. It is unnecessary to remote Mite black . olives to plant the royal palms in Little Havana. There.are many.', other more appropriate sites, such as SW 17th or 22nd Avenues. whiv were denuded of trees when widened to four lanes. We hopes `fibs Kiwanis' generous donation can be put to good use without this destruction. A 3) As planned, royal palms are inappropriate: a) Sect iona o Sth Street have overhead powerlines and streetlights which mayie damaged by the palms. b) Royal palms will provide little i. any r shade. e) Who will pay for the damage caused by a falling frcmd the hood or windshield of a car parked under a palm? 4) The argument that the black olives block store s gnea-g merit. While a problem may have existed several year* sao,.p#ti trees are now well above the height of the signs. 90- 59 lb A T 1. 1M following notion was /Roost r carollo, who mewed its sbptiost Nnlow Mo.
