"Being HIV positive is a gift, a kind of spiritual awakening-" 1988 was a significant year for Larry Hyer, a prominent Palm Beach business and civic leader: Larry won a South Florida body-building title and learned he was HIV positive. Larry still owns one of the oldest gyms in the state of Florida and is a board member of numerous organizations devoted to helping people in crisis. He volunteers his time to an organization that feeds abandoned children and has donated the start-up funds for Positive Link, Inc. "For me, being HIV positive is a gift, a kind of spiritual awakening that directs me to educate and assist others. 1 want to help others understand that being HIV positive is not a death sentence. For me, it is an invitation to take hold of life and see there is courage and beauty for us all." It 90- 81 Sonia Singleton: 'I am not a victim. I am a victor. " Sonia Singleton is a native Floridian who works as an intervention specialist with Community Outreach Prevention and Education, an organization that counsels intravenous drug users and crack addicts and provides AIDS educa- tion in Miami and Belle Glade, Florida. Sonia's knowledge about drug addiction comes from personal experience: for years she could not escape her own. Three years ago Sonia's life changed. She was diagnosed HIV positive and told she had six months to live. Sonia takes personal pleasure in reminding that doctor she is more alive than ever. "HIV positive is not a punishment. In fact, it has taught me that everyone must make an opportunity for himself or herself in life. Everyone must make a choice. And the choice I make is to live well because I know I am more than just a physical being. No virus can touch the spirit within. I am not a victim. am a victor." i TerryScott: "Being HIV positive brought more into my life than it took away." Terry Scott, an acclaimed designer noted for his corporate and residential work, is well known in Palm Beach for his civic commitments to the museum, the ballet and the American Red Cross. His life is productive, full and vital. Though he is HIV positive, Terry views this fact as "bringing more into my life than it took away." As co-founder of Positive Link, Inc., Terry continues his commitment to the community by helping people realize that AIDS education is the essential first step. "I am not interested in being a martyr. I just want to inform people and to empower them. I don't want people who are HIV positive, or those who fear they are positive, to die because of despair and fear. Be active and productive individuals because there is dignity and value in participating fully in life. Ignorance, fear and indifference are far more dangerdus than any virus." 6 94-- 813 Jeanette Martinez: "My child is my salvation." Jeanette Martinez is a former respiratory therapist who lives in Ft. Lauderdale with her dauther, Amorita. Both are HIV positive but Jeanette's motherhood is not a tragedy. Martinez believes she contracted the HIV virus when she received a trans- fusion for surgery in 1985. In 1988, she was raped and out of that awful union came her daughter. "She's been my salvation. Without her, I felt I had no purpose, but now I see a direction and an essential focus in my life." Jeanette volunteers hertime at Center One and works with the babies of other women with the virus. Jeanette Martinez is devoted to Amorita's life and believes she'll be around to help her daughter become an adult. 7 90-- 813 HapostTME, FACT SHEET Event Name: POSITIVE LINK Locations Palm Beach, Florida - October 7th and Dates: Miami, Florida - October 21st Atlanta, Georgia - T.B.A. Washington, D.C. - T.B.A. New York, N.Y. - T.B.A. Activities: Walkathons, Runs and Dance-a-thons will take place in the designated cities.
