HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-90-0866J-90-950 10/26/90 (M 90-810) (10/18/90) RESOLUTION NO. 9 V— 866 A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING AND IDENTIFYING THE GEOGRAPHICAL AREA WITHIN THE CITY OF MIAMI HAVING AS ITS NORTHERN BOUNDARY NORTHWEST 7TH STREET FROM THE MIAMI RIVER TO NORTHWEST 27TH AVENUE; AND THE SOUTHERN BOUNDARY BEING SOUTHWEST 17TH STREET FROM SOUTHWEST 12TH TO 27TH AVENUE, AND SOUTHWEST 11TH STREET FROM THE METRORAIL GUIDEWAY TO SOUTHWEST 12TH AVENUE; WITH THE WESTERN BOUNDARY BEING NORTHWEST/SOUTHWEST 27TH AVENUE FROM NORTHWEST 7TH STREET TO SOUTHWEST 17TH STREET; AND THE EASTERN BOUNDARY BEING SOUTHWEST 12TH AVENUE FROM 11TH TO 17TH STREET AND THE METRORAIL GUIDEWAY FROM SOUTHWEST 11TH STREET TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH THE MIAMI RIVER AND THE MIAMI RIVER FROM THE METRORAIL GUIDEWAY TO NORTHWEST 7TH STREET AS A NEIGHBORHOOD THAT STANDS AS A MONUMENT NOW AND FOREVER TO THE HISTORY, LANGUAGE AND CULTURE OF THE CUBAN PEOPLE WITH SAID NEIGHBORHOOD TO BE HEREAFTER CALLED "PEQUENA HABANA" IN HONOR AND IN RECOGNITION OF THE ENRICHMENT THAT THE CUBAN PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN TO THE CITY OF MIAMI; FURTHER, DIRECTING THAT SIGNAGE TO IDENTIFY THE NEIGHBORHOOD BE ERECTED AT ITS BOUNDARIES AND ENTRANCES TO ALLOW RESIDENTS AND VISITORS EASY ACCESS TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD. WHEREAS, as a result of the dictatorship of Fidel Castro on the island of Cuba, the Cuban people fled the island seeking freedom; and WHEREAS, the exodus of the Cuban people to the City of Miami created a concentration of Cuban immigrants residing in a specific area of the City of Miami; and WHEREAS, this area has immigrants and has become known become identified with said and referred to as "Pequena Habana" (Little Havana) due to the development of their culture, history and customs; CITY COMMISSION MEE.TR G OF NOV S 1990 tummlon W9 0 W 8 6 6� 1 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby establishes and identifies the geographical area within the City of Miami having as its northern boundary Northwest 7th Street from the Miami River to Northwest 27th Avenue; and the southern boundary being Southwest 17th Street from Southwest 12th to 27th Avenue, and Southwest 11th Street from the Metrorail guideway to Southwest 12th Avenue; with the western boundary being Northwest/Southwest 27th Avenue from Northwest 7th Street to Southwest 17th Street; and the eastern boundary being Southwest 12th Avenue from 11th to 17th Street and the Metrorail guideway from Southwest 11th Street to its intersection with the Miami River, and the Miami River from the Metrorail guideway to its intersection with Northwest 7th Street, as a neighborhood to be hereafter called "Pequena Habana" (Little Havana). Section 3. The area identified as "Pequena Habana" (Little Havana) shall serve as a monument now and forever to the history, language and culture of the Cuban people in honor and in recognition of the enrichment that the Cuban people have given to the City of Miami. Section 4. Signage to identify the area at its boundaries, and entrances into the neighborhood shall be erected to allow residents and visitors direction and access to the area. Section 5.
