Dear Mr. Od 1 o:

In November of 1989, the City Commission awarded the Black Archives
Treasurer
$66,000.00 for the reconstruction of the Historic Dorsey House. In
Theodora W. Cooper
IM, additional funds In the amount of $40,000.00 were secured from
Member -At -Large
Metro -Dade County. Because of the unforeseen conditions, funds In the
M.AdudieRange
amount of $55,000.00 are still required to complete the project.
Member -At -Large
Rachel C. Williams
Despite the need for additional funding, the Black Archives had to
begin the reconstruction so that existing funding was not Jeopardized.

To date, an architect has been contracted and reconstruction has
Theodora W. Cooper
begun. After demo i i t i on costs and architectural fees, the Black
LeomeS.Culmer
Archives has $89,000.00 to complete the project. An additional
Dorothy Jenkins Fields
$55,000.00 is needed due to: (1) the Increase In the cost of
Enid C.Johnson
materials since the original reconstruction estimate, (11) the

necessity of Job site security.

The Dorsey House is an Important community project. Once completed,
Mahan H. Shannon
the Dorsey House will be used as a museum for Inner-city youth and

members of the ceamunity-at-large who wish to learn more about
Gwendolyn H. Welters
Dr. Daniel T. Williams
Overtown's vibrant past. As a part of the developing Historic
Rachel C.Wuliams
Overtown Folkl ife Village, the Dorsey House will also provide
employment opportunities for individuals In Overtown.
The Black Archives respectfully request that additional funding for
the Dorsey House be placed on the City Commission's July 10, 1"1
agenda. If monies are not received within the next 30 days,
reconstruction will cease. Stopping the reconstruction at this phase
will be an Invitation for vandalism. The Black Archives has been
working with the City of Miami on this project for over five years.
To see the project fail at this stage would not only be a disservice
to the youth of Overtown but the entire City of Miami as well.
If you have any questions, please contact the Black Archives'
Administrator, Valerie Riles at 638-6064.
Sincerely,
ea4
