HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-91-0551J-91-543 7/2/91 RESOLUTION NO. l4 5 51 A RESOLUTION CODESIGNATING SOUTHWEST 17TH AVENUE FROM SOUTH DIXIE HIGHWAY TO SOUTH BAYSHORE DRIVE, MIAMI, FLORIDA, AS "ALICE WAINWRIGHT WAY"; ALLOCATING THE AMOUNT OF $1,500.00 FROM "SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ACCOUNTS CONTINGENT FUND, FY'1990-91" TO PAY FOR THE PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION OF SIGNS CODESIGNATING SAID STREET; FURTHER, DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO INSTRUCT THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN DESIGNATED OFFICES. WHEREAS, Alice Wainwright was the first woman to serve as a Miami City Commissioner, serving from 1961 to 1965; and WHEREAS, during her term as Commissioner, Mrs. Wainwright let the movement to raise funds for construction of the Sewage Treatment Plant on Virginia Key; and WHEREAS, she dedicated much of her life to the enhancement of our environment and to the preservation of the quality of life in South Florida; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Motion No. 91-347, adopted May 9, 1991, the City Commission instructed the City Administration to schedule a hearing in connection with the proposed codesignation of a street in Coconut Grove in honor to the late Alice Wainwright; and. WHEREAS, Ordinance No. 10761, adopted July 12, 1990, created the Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee and entrusted said Committee with the responsibility of reviewing street codesignation requests and making recommendations to the City Commission in its determination as to whether or not a street should be codesignated; and WHEREAS, pursuant to the City Commission's directive, the Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee, at its meeting of June 11, 1991, reviewed the City Administration's proposal for codesignation of Southwest 17th Avenue between South Dixie Highway and South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, as "ALICE WAINWRIGHT WAY" subject to the condition set forth by the Committee at that meeting; and WHEREAS, the street requested to be codesignated is located in the Coconut Grove area, and said codesignation is intended to memorialize Alice Wainwright in our community; and WHEREAS, the Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee has recommended to the City Commission that this proposal for codesignation be granted; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings set forth in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby codesignates Southwest 17th Avenue between South Dixie Highway and South Bayshore Drive, Miami, Florida, as "ALICE WAINWRIGHT WAY". Section 3. The City Manager is hereby directed to instruct the Director of Public Works to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Police Department, Fire, Rescue and Inspection Services Department, Department of General Services Administration/Solid Waste, Dade County Public Works Department and United States Postal Service. Odi City Manager RECOMMENDATION: SUBJECT Waiver of fees and • Codesignation of "Alice Wainwright Way" REFERENCES ENCLOSURES Resolution The City of Miami Street Codesignation Committee recommends that the Miami City Commission adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the codesignation of S.W. 17 Avenue from South Dixie Highway to South Bayshore Drive as "Alice Wainwright Way". In addition, it is recommended that the City Commission waive all fees and expenses for the Codesignation of "Alice Wainwright Way". BACKGROUND: In compliance with the motion 91-347 made on May 9, 1991, the City Commission requested to codesignate a street for the late Alice Wainwright. Alice Wainwright was the first woman to serve as a Miami City Commissioner, serving from 1961 to 1965. During her term as Commissioner, Mrs. Wainwright led the movement to raise funds for construction of the sewage treatment plant on Virginia Key. Alice Wainwright dedicated much of her life to the enhancement of our environment and to the preservation of the quality of life in South Florida. Expenses, however, will be incurred for the physical manufacture and installation of the signs. Therefore, these expenses must be paid through our "Special Programs and Accounts Contingent Fund, FY'1990- 91" as explained in the attached resolution. (00 -1 91- 551
