HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-91-0299,r, a g J-91-3'75 ' ! 4/11/91 a- RESOLUTION NO.91— 299 A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MONUMENT HONORING THE SPANISH NAVY ON OCCASION OF THE QUINCENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA AND DESIGNATING A SITE IN BICENTENNIAL PARK FOR SAID MONUMENT. WHEREAS, Erik I. Martel, Consul General of Spain in Miami, has requested the approval of the dedication of a monument honoring the Spanish Navy on occasion of the Quincentennial Celebration of the Discovery of America; and WHEREAS, the petition from the Spanish Consul reflects a desire of many Hispanics in Florida to commence the celebrations of 1992 by honoring the sailors of the Spanish Navy that discovered the new world under the command of Admiral Christopher Columbus and who were the first to bring the western culture to America; and WHEREAS, the area proposed in this request is within Bicentennial Park, next to the docking facilities where U.S. and foreign,visiting vessels usually dock; and WHEREAS`, the Spanish training ship "Juan Sebastian Elcano" will be -visiting Miami this coming June and it would be fitting to inaugurate the monument during this visit; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The construction of a monument is hereby endorsed to honor the Spanish Navy on occasion of the Quincentennial Celebration of the Discovery of America. Section 2. An area within the plaza at the extreme' Southwest corner of Bicentennial Park is hereby designated as the site for the monument honoring the Spanish Navy. i.� a _ x Section 3: Said area shall be officialllp named "PlatPa of the Spanish Nary", also to be known as "Plaza de la Marina Espanola." Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
