HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-91-0296d-91 =332 4111-191 RESOLUTION NO. 2 9 6 A RESOLUTION ENDORSING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A MEMORIAL IN HONOR OF ALL PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN FREEDOM WHILE ENROUTE TO THE SHORES OF AMERICA; ACCEPTING THE DONATION OF THE "LIBERTY COLUMN MONUMENT" BY ARTIST HUMBERTO SANCHEZ AS A FITTING TRIBUTE TO SERVE AS SAID MEMORIAL; DESIGNATING A SITE AT THE EASTERLY TERMINUS OF CHOPIN PLAZA AS THE SITE FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SAID MEMORIAL; AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO PROVIDE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND ERECTION OF SAID MEMORIAL. WHEREAS, for the past three decades many people of all races and origins have been forced to leave their homeland in the Caribbean Basin and elsewhere in fear of oppressive governments which were engaged in human rights violations; and WHEREAS, many who left seeking liberty traveled on the high seas making the shores of America their destination;- and WHEREAS, enroute to America many were exposed to hazardous A t conditions where they encountered many hardships, starvation, illness.and for some even death; and t WHEREAS, it is fitting that a memorial be constructed in honor of those who lost their lives in an attempt to gain freedom r f. while enroute to the shores of America; and WHEREAS, artist Humberto Sanchez has offered to donate his } ' "Liberty..<.Column Monument" to serve as said memorial to those who died; :and r� WHEREAS,' the easterly terminus of Chopin Plaza is an ' appropriate site for the location for said memorial; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED B Y THE COMMISSION OF THE .CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: j Section 1.
