Box 330708 Miami, FL 33233-0708 4C' Dear Ms. Hirai: Thank you for contacting me and sending me a copy of your resolution concerning the war in the Persian Gulf. Such statements are a valuable means of conveying the views of citizens to the President and other elected representatives and to the public at large. Now that the hostilities are over, our first priority continues to be to gain the release of prisoners of war. The return by the Iraqis of a group of coalition prisoners was a constructive first step. All of us rejoice for the families and friends of those brave individuals who sacrificed so much for our country. However, we must continue to press until all of those who are missing are accounted for. As our troops begin to return to their homes and families, all of us have the opportunity to express our gratitude and admiration for their accomplishments. This is a great moment for all Americans and one in which we can be very justifiably proud. Again, thank you for contacting me. Although the war is over, the work has just begun on what measures can be taken to assure a more stable and secure future for all of the peoples of the Middle East. Please be assured that I, and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, which I have the honor to chair, will be looking at these questions in the coming months. Sincerely, 0X7A TE B. I appreciate hearing from you. As you may know, I supported continued reliance upon sanctions, as an alternative to war, when this matter was debated in the Senate in January. However, a majority of the Congress did support authorizing the immediate use of force by the President, and the President has now chosen to use that authority granted him. I hope, as I know all Americans do, that there will be a swift resolution to this conflict, with a minimum of damage and loss of life. In spite of our differences in the past, we must all join now in full support of the men and women serving with such great courage and skill in the Gulf. Sincerely, n George J. Mitchell C?
