BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department Dive Team is increasingly being placed in a position of having to refuse to dive for evidence, cars or other items, in the interest of officer safety. This is due to the rising level of pollution in the coastal waters as well as the Miami River. The risk can, however, be minimized by wearing state-of-the-art dive suits and masks. This equipment reduces injury to the diver as well as costs to the City resulting from the loss of a diver. It is, therefore, recommended that a Resolution authorizing the purchase of dive suits and masks, at a total cost not to exceed $16,000, and allocating funding therefor from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project No. 690001, Index Code 029002-247, be approved.
