Martin
Luther
King, III
Martin Luther King, III was born in Montgomery, Alabama, the second oldest of the four children of Dt
Martin Luther King, Jt and Coretta Scott King. He was nurtured among a group of people deeply
committed to the struggle for human rights and a nonviolent society and as a result has assimilated and
utilized those values in his personal and public life.
On two occasions in the late 1970's, Mr. King represented President Jimmy Carter in official delegations
to foreign countries in an effort to promote peace. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Martin
Luther King, Jt Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Mt King toured the poverty and drought stricken
African nations of Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Somalia, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia in October and
December of 1984. As a result of that fact finding tour, the King Center joined other American
development associations in launching the Africa Initiative, which has committed itself to finding
long-term solutions to end starvation on the African continent.
In September; 1987, Mt King was a key figure in a joint Black -Jewish tour of Israel sponsored by the
Anti -Defamation League. Shortly thereafter, Israel announced further reductions in its ties with South
Africa.
Mr King also has served the King Center as a fundraiser public relations official and vice president and
director of Youth Programs. He played a major role in the successful lobbying effort for legislation to
make his father's birthday on January 15 a national holiday.
For several years, Mt King has helped lead voter registration drives throughout the country. In addition,
he has promoted social change through his position as a board member of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference (SCLC).
Mr King is a lifetime member of SCLC, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
and Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also affiliated with several political and civic
organizations, including the National Association of County Officials and the National Association of
Black County Officials.
Many universities, churches, civic groups, and social organizations have invited Mt King to speak before
them, and several have presented him with awards and commendations. Notably, he is listed among the
Outstanding Young Men in America.
Mr. King received a degree in political science from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1979.
While there, he was frequently on the Honor Roll and was named Who's Who Among Students in
American Colleges and Universities. He also served as a member of the Student Government Association
and the Student Advisory Committee.
In November, 1986, Mt King was elected to the seven member Fulton County Commission as an at -large
representative of District 1, comprising approximately 700,000 residents. During his tenure, Commissioner
King has drafted legislation creating the Contract Compliance/Equal Employment Opportunity
Department which regulates minority business participation in county contracts as well as insuring equal
employment opportunities for all employees of Fulton County. Also, in 1988, the Commission«
inaugurated the King °ummer Intern Program which matches high school students with summer jobs in
major Atlanta companies and organizations. He also advocates the purification of the Bounty's natural
water resources and seeks viable solutions for the proper disposal of hazardous waste materials.
