Anna Kisselgoff, The New York Times
Tap dancing, a unique American art form, is currently enjoying a popular
resurgence. Due in part to exposure through recent television speotals such as
PBS's "Dance In America", the revival of large scale, tap -based Broadway musicals
like "Sophisticated Ladies" and the Tony Award winning "Black and Blue", and the
recently released Hollywood feature film "TAP" starring Gregory Hines and Sammy
Davis, Jr., audiences across America are once again enjoying the excitement and
musicality of this wonderful dance style.
The roots of tap can be traced to influences from many cultures including African
percussion and dance styles, Irish jigs 'and English clog dances. "Miami Rhythms on
Tap", an evening -length revue to be presented in Miami's Busman Center for the
Performing Arts in June 1991, will showcase memo of the nation's finest tap masters
in a program which celebrates the unique rhythms of Miami's own multi-ethnio
community. The international heritage of percussive dancing will be explored
through collaborations among Miami's own Spanish, Cuban and AfrWin-American
dancers.
The performance will feature the tap dancing of such celebrated artists as Steve
Condos and LaVaughn Robinson; critically acclaimed jazz musicians Steve Bagby,
Vince Maggio, and Don Kaufman{ flamenco dancers and musicians from Miami's own
"Ballet Espanol Rosita Segovia", and young artists including Brenda Buffsuno and
Marshall Davis, Jr. whose ideas and innovations are taking these classic forms into
the twenty-first century.

"Miami Rhythms on Tap" is modeled after extraordinarily successful program at New
York's Carnegie Hall, the Colorado Dance Festival in Boulder, and major tap
festivals in Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The artistry of the dancers and
live musicians will be augmented by vintage film ollps from tap's hey day in
Hollywood musicals, and personal anecdotes on the development of the art form by,
artists whose careers have been an integral part. of it's history.
The program will be produced by the Florida Dance Association, Florida's. statewide
service and support organization for dance, and Miami Light, Ina., one of the
Southeast's leading new presenters of contemporary danoe, theater and w"o
performances, in consultation with Lorraine Condos of the International Tap
Association.
After its premiere in Miami, "Miami Rhythms on' Tap" is scheduled for appearanoof L
in Ft. Lauderdale, Punta Gorda, and finally Tampa, Florida where it will be the
