Odio REFERENCES: City Manager ENCLOSURES: RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached ordinance establishing a Special Revenue Fund entitled: "School Resource Officer Program" and appropriating funds for -the operation of same, in the amount of $85,261, from the School Resource Officer Enhancement Grant. BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department is eligible to receive State funds for the enhancement of an existing School Resource Officer Program. These funds have been made available by the 1990 legislative session which appropriated $5 million dollars statewide for this purpose. The Dade County School District was awarded $1,178,281 out of the $5 million dollar appropriation. The Dade County School Board approved a plan allowing local police agencies to receive 50% of their $1,178,281, to enhance existing School Resource Officer'Programs. Calculated on a pro-- rata basis, each of the 76 secondary schools in Dade County which currently has an SRO program will receive $7,751. The City of Miami has 11 such schools and will, therefore, receive $85,261. In order to receive the funds the Police Department must document its compliance with the grant requirements that the funds be used for enhancement of the School Resource Officer Program only.
