Home My WebLink AboutR-92-0709Jr-92-731 10/27/92 RESOLUTION NO. 9 2- 709 A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE DEDICATION (NOT NAMING) OF THE FORTHCOMING NEW BRICKELL AVENUE BRIDGE TO THE MEMORY OF ROY F. KENZIE, AND URGING THE STATE OF FLORIDA LEGISLATURE AND THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO TAKE THE NECESSARY ACTIONS TO EFFECTUATE SAID DEDICATION; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE HEREIN NAMED OFFICIALS. WHEREAS, Roy F. Kenzie served as the Executive Director of the Downtown Development Authority from 1977 to 1988 during the period when Downtown Miami experienced its greatest period of growth and development to date; and WHEREAS, during his tenure and due to his efforts, the Brickell Avenue Area was incorporated into the Downtown Development District; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The City Commission hereby supports the dedication (not naming) of the forthcoming new Brickell Avenue Bridge to the memory of Roy F. Kenzie and hereby urges the State CITY COM OSSION MEETING OF NOV 1 2 1992 Resolution Na 92- 709 of Florida Legislature and the State of Florida Department of Transportation to take the necessary actions to effectuate said dedication. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Governor Lawton Chiles, all members of the Dade Delegation and the Florida Department of Transportation. O d i o REFERENCES : FROM: City Manager For November 12, 1992 ENCLOSURESP:ity Commission Meeting Recommendation It is respectfully requested that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution in support of the Florida Department of Transportation's dedicating_ (not naming) the new Brickell Avenue Bridge to the memory of Roy F. Kenzie. Background This effort is being made in recognition of Roy F. Kenzie's 12 years of service to the Development of Downtown Miami as Executive Director of the DDA. During Roy's tenure, Downtown made great strides towards becoming the financial, governmental, business and cultural center of Greater Miami. i This would be an appropriate tribute to his memory since Roy was one of the early supporters of a design competition for the new bridge. The competition was held and produced a unique representation commemorating Miami's history and early pioneers. The DDA Board of Directors passed Resolution No. 47/91 on j December 20., 1991 requesting City Commission consideration of the placement of a commemorative plaque on the new bridge in memory i of Roy F. Kenzie. f1, Subject to City Commission endorsement, the designation will be presented to the Florida Department of Transportation and. the State Legislature for their consideration.
