SUBJECT Resolution Establishing a
Uniformed Bike Patrol
RErERENCES
ENCLOSURES
It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution establishing a
Uniformed Bike Patrol, and allocating funds therefor, in the
amount of $11,000 from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund be
approved.
BACKGROUND:
The Police Department is committed to exploring innovative
tactics for increasing the effectiveness of its uniform patrol.
The utilization of bicycles is one such program that has proven
to be quite beneficial to various departments throughout the
country. This Uniformed Bike Patrol would provide greater
mobility, yet maintain the high visibility and community
relations image of walking beat patrols. The start up costs for
this Patrol include the purchase of bicycles, parts, maintenance
and uniforms and also training.
The, initial Patrol will consist of one Sergeant and two Officers
and will patrol the Downtown Biscayne Boulevard area. If the
pilot program is successful, additional officers will be utilized
to patrol a larger area.
It is therefore recommended that the Resolution establishing the
Uniformed Bike Patrol, and allocating funds therefor in the
amount of $11,000 from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project
No. 690001, Index Code 029002-247, be approved.
