Od City Manage RECOMMENDATION: DATE May 6, 1992 u1b SUBJECT Resolution Establishing a Uniformed Bike Patrol RErERENCES ENCLOSURES It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution establishing a Uniformed Bike Patrol, and allocating funds therefor, in the amount of $11,000 from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund be approved. BACKGROUND: The Police Department is committed to exploring innovative tactics for increasing the effectiveness of its uniform patrol. The utilization of bicycles is one such program that has proven to be quite beneficial to various departments throughout the country. This Uniformed Bike Patrol would provide greater mobility, yet maintain the high visibility and community relations image of walking beat patrols. The start up costs for this Patrol include the purchase of bicycles, parts, maintenance and uniforms and also training. The, initial Patrol will consist of one Sergeant and two Officers and will patrol the Downtown Biscayne Boulevard area. If the pilot program is successful, additional officers will be utilized to patrol a larger area.
