SUBJECT
Resolution Funding the Downtown
Miami Information Officers
Program
REFERENCES:
ENCLOSURES.
It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution funding the
Downtown Miami Information Officers Program, and allocating funds
therefor from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, at a cost not to
exceed $20,000, be approved.
The Police Department encourages the use of innovative ideas in
the area of crime prevention. The Downtown Miami Information
Officers Program is one such idea. This program increases public
awareness in preventing crimes, while at the same time presenting
a positive image of the City of Miami to visiting tourists.
Uniformed students from the Miami Dade Community College and the
New World School of the Arts, in conjunction with the Downtown
Development Authority and the Miami Police Department, will
provide higher visibility and offer greater security to tourists
in the downtown hotel and retail core. These students will
receive training from the Miami Police Department and will be an
enhancement to the ranger program. Their primary
responsibilities will include the dissemination of tourist
information as well as directing tourists to their destinations,
avoiding high risk crime areas.
Funding for this program is coming from several sources. The
Dade County Tourist Development Council has pledged $3,000. The
Downtown Development Authority has pledged $5,000. Funding is
also being sought from the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors
Bureau and the Miami Parking System.
It is, therefore, recommended that the Resolution authorizing the
funding of the Downtown Miami Information Officers Program, and
allocating funds therefor in the amount of $20,000, funding to be
provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project No. 690001,
Index Code 029002-247, be approved.
