Resolution Approving an
SUBJECT . Allocation of Funds for
Old Fire House No. 2
City Commission Meeting
REFERENCES O f February 13, 1992
ENCLOSURES.
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached resolution, approving the allocation of $100,000 from
the Community Development Block Grant program as matching funds
to an existing State grant 'awarded for the restoration of
Historic Old, Fire House No. 2, located at 1401 North Miami
Avenue, and authorize an amendment to the 16th year Community
Development Final Statement.
The Department of Community Development has analyzed the need to
amend the 16th Year Final Statement to provide matching funds in
the amount of $100,000 from the 16th Year Community Development
Block Grant program contingency funds, for assistance in the
restoration of the historic Old Fire House No. 2 for which the
City has received a state grant in the amount of $229,425 for
first phase exterior renovation activities.
Old Fire House No. 2, which is currently vacant and in disrepair,
is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The City
of Miami Fire Department plans to carry forth a full restoration
of the building interior, to be used as a museum and for fire
prevention education programs and exterior improvements to
complete the restoration.
Additional funding for this project will be provided in the form
of $30,000 in Fire Bonds and another $375,000 in State grants for
interior restoration. Community Development funding will require
that Davis Bacon wage rates apply to the entire restoration.
The restoration of this Old Fire House No. 2 complies with
Community Development guidelines by benefiting low and moderate
income residents of the area and by serving as a historic
preservation project.
