RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully requested that the City Commission allocate funding in the amount of $25,000, from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, as a contribution to the Liberty City Optimists, Drug Awareness Program. f BACKGROUND: The Miami Police Department supports those groups involved in offering alternatives to substance abuse and crime to the youth of our community. The Liberty City Optimists have designed such a program, promoting sports and academic achievement as essential ingredients to the growth and development of inner city children. The counselling is designed to increase the participants knowledge of the dangers of drugs and the impact that it has on the people who use them. This program is anticipated to reach approximately 500 high risk students likely to be directly exposed to illegal drug activity. It is therefore recommended that a Resolution allocating $25,000 to the Liberty City Optimists, Drug Awareness Program, funding to be provided from the Law Enforcement Trust Fund, Project No. 690001, Index Code 290904-996, be accepted.
