RECOMMENDATION: DATE : D E C 2 0 1991 FILE SUBJECT: Discovery of America Quincentennial Committee REFERENCES: Discussion Item ENCLOSURES: January 9, 1992 It is recommended that the City Commission discuss and review the request of representatives from the Discovery of America Quincentennial Committee for. City in -kind services for the upcoming events related to the Tour of the Discovery Ships to Miami during the month of February 1992. The City Commission at its meeting of December. 5, 1991, requested that this issue be brought back at the January 9, 1992 meeting for further discussion of the necessary City services for said event. BACKGROUND: On December 5, 1991, representatives of the Discovery of America Quincentennial Committee requested assistance from the City in support of the official Tour of the replicas of the La Nina, La Pinta and La Santa Maria, which will arrive in Miami on February 14, 1992, and will dock at Bayfront Park during their fifteen (15) day stay. The City of Miami has been selected as the first port of call of the official Tour of the Caravels. The City Commission approved the waiving of all fees associated with docking of the Discovery Ships at Bayfront Park and further, directed the administration to identify as much City in -kind services as possible for the historic tour.. The Executive Director of the Quincentennial Committee has advised us that they have not yet finalized plans for the different events that will take place in connection with the docking of the Discovery Ships. When plans for all the activities are finalized we will prepare a detailed report indicating the level of City in -kind services (Police, Fire and clean-up) needed for said events. The organizers have indicated definite plans will be available before the January 9, 1992 Commission meeting. 92- 42
