But. Guerrero, the commis- sioner and a protege of Demo- cratic Gov. Ann Richards, said she would remain the Demo- cratic candidate for a full six -year term in the Nov. 3 election. "I made mistakes, deeply seri- ous mistakes," Guerrero, 34. told a House chamber and gallery crowded with her supporters. "I allowed misperceptions, embellishments and errors of fact about my academic record to go uncorrected. I didn't admit to the truth of those facts when ques- tioned about them," she said. Guerrero's resignation fol- lowed disclosures that for 12 years she falsely claimed to be a graduate of the University of Texas. Official campaign and House biographies also had called her an honors graduate. But grade transcripts she made public last week showed she actu- ally had been a C-plus student who was more than a semester short of receiving a diploma. She was Gov. -elect Richards' first appointment, and became the first woman and first His- panic to serve an unexpired term on the influential commission, which regulates the oil and gas industries. &Ta - i
