Realizing that the Holiday Season, is the time of year when most Senior citizens
commit suicide, Unique Cultural Variations and other organizatons felt a need to
let Senior citizen know that "THEY'VE GOTA FRIEND". So, in December
of 1988, the first 'YOU'VE GOT A FRIEND- HOLIDAY SHOW'. was held
at the South Miami City Hall Chambers in South Dade,
The show was also designed to help enhance the understanding of Multicultural
awareness through the Arts and bridge the generation gap between Seniors and
our Youth. Nearly 150 students participated through dance, music, drama, rap
and modeling. For students that were not talented and just wanted to give a helping
hand, they worked back stage, emcee the show or simply ushered Seniors. This
showed their admiration and love for the seniors because they just wanted to be
apart of this experience!
The first program had a mere 300 seniors, but our Pre -Valentine Show this year,
held at theDade County Auditorium on February 3, 1993, had 1,200 seniors to attend.
This show has grown. Our youth from elementary, middle and senior high school
have learned how to take special interest in our Seniors, which includes their
Immediate family members as well as community neighbors during this critical
time of the year.
The senior's also really appreciate a chance to see Dade Counties best youth
performers as well as some of their own! They also have a chance to exhibit
their Arts and Crafts work in seven categories city wide and win prizes.
Everyone waits in anticipation to find out who the Oldest Male and Female
mobile Senior Citizens will be. M l Crowning them King and Queen for a Day.
THERE IS NO WAY TO SAY THAT THERE IS NO NEED FOR THIS EVENT

OBJECTIVES:
Help develop a sense of pride for the elderly as it relates to their age.
- Help promote positive interaction between the elderly and the youth,
- To provide a unique outlet for the elderly in our community to participate
and/or attend a ERE,vE, program designed specifically for their awareness
in Multicultural arts as well as their overall pleasure and enjoyment,
ASSESSMENT:
This program will reduce stress, loneness, feelings of isolation
for the elderly, especially during the Holiday Season.
It will help bridge the ever widening gap between our youth
and our senior citizens,
j - It will provide gifts for seniors that would otherwise go without,
' - Inspiration for the younger elderly to recognize and honor the
4 older senior (ex. Honoring someone 107 years old).
- Give thanks and credit to individuals and organizations that have been
j supportive and instrumental to the development of programs for our
seniors.
