We are writing in regard to a personal appearance before the City
Commission on September 7, 1993, for the purpose of requesting two City
Resolutions.
The first Resolution request is for street closures the weekends in January
1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 occurring one week prior to the date of the
NFL Super Bowl, for the American Airlines Miami Mile.
The second Resolution request is to grant the Miami Mile exclusivity as the
only footrace of any length (e.g., one mile, 5K, 10K or marathon) on Biscayne
Boulevard or other streets of downtown Miami during the month of January
from 1994 until 1999, and an additional 5 years thereafter, based on the Miami
Mile Company's performance of staging a world -class televised running
event.
These resolutions are necessary to enable The Miami Mile Company to secure
the necessary multi -year sponsorship and: television agreements for
successful production of the American Airlines Miami Mile event. By
staging the event each year, we bring Miami Olympic caliber running free of
charge to the general public, while providing world-wide television coverage
to support tourism and related industries.
With the move of the Grand Prix to Homestead, today more than ever, the
American Airlines Miami Mile is the downtown Miami sports event
providing the City global benefits, at the same time offering a healthy
participatory activity for Miamians of all ages and ethnic background.
