The American Airlines Miami Mile, conducted by the Miami Mile Company, is hereby authorized, said event to be held annually in January on the weekend prior to the date of the National Football League Super Bowl, beginning in 1994 and oontixmi through 1999, and the closure of Biscayne Boulevard and certain intersecting roadways in Downtown Miami is hereby authorized, said closures for the intersecting roadways to be determined each year prior to the event. Section 2. Simi.lar footraces or marathons are hereby prohibited during the month of January in the Downtown Miami. Area, partioul.arly on Biscayne Boulevard for the period beginning 1994 through 1999. CITY COMUSSION DIZFFTEMr, OF Resolution No. 93— 665 Section 3. The herein approva7.s and authorizations are hereby subject to the organizers (A) holding the City harm7..ess from any liability and covenanting that the City will not be held liable should the American Airlines Miami Mile require relocation to another area, due to any projects or improvements affecting the Downtown area; (B) obtaining &11 neoessaxy permits and insurance to protect the City in the amount as prescribed by the City Manager or his designee; and (C) paying for all neoessaxy costs of City services and applicable fees associated with said event. ! The first Resolution request is for street closures the weekends in January 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 occurring one week prior to the date of the NFL Super Bowl, for the American Airlines Miami Mile. The second Resolution request is to grant the Miami Mile exclusivity as the only footrace of any length (e.g., one mile, 5K, 10K or marathon) on Biscayne Boulevard or other streets of downtown Miami during the month of January from 1994 until 1999, and an additional 5 years thereafter, based on the Miami Mile Company's performance of staging a world -class televised running event. These resolutions are necessary to enable The Miami Mile Company to secure the necessary multi -year sponsorship and: television agreements for successful production of the American Airlines Miami Mile event. By staging the event each year, we bring Miami Olympic caliber running free of charge to the general public, while providing world-wide television coverage to support tourism and related industries. Plummer 001 9 3 r S S RESOLUTION Whereas, American Airlines is ready to make a multi -year financial commitment to keep the American Airlines Miami Mile in downtown Miami and whereas, the City of Miami receives positive world-wide image enhancement plus economic impact benefit from the American Airlines Miami Mile, the Miami Mile Company puts forth the following requests: REQUEST FOR CITY RESOLUTION closing Biscayne Boulevard between SE 1st Street, north to Port Boulevard, both Northbound and Southbound, from 5 a.m. To 5 p.m. on January 22, 1994, and the weekends in January 1995,1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 occurring one week prior to the date of the NFL Super Bowl, for the running of the AMERICAN AIRLINES MIAMI MILE. REQUEST FOR CITY RESOLUTION prohibiting any other footrace of any length (e.g., one mile, 5K, 10K or marathon) on Biscayne Boulevard or other streets of downtown Miami during the month of January 1994 until 1999, and an additional 5 years thereafter based on the Miami Mile Company's performance of staging a world -class televised running event. In order for the American Airlines Miami Mile to obtain long term commitments for international, national, regional, and local television coverage, plus sponsorship commitments to adequately promote the event and the City of Miami world-wide, these resolutions are necessary. 93_ 665
