BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The area of Northeast 2nd Avenue from 17th Street to 36th Street, Miami, Florida, is hereby designated as "The Film District of Miami". Section 2. That item is the designation of NE 2nd Avc from 17th Street to 36th St. as the FILM DISTRICT OF MIAMI. The reason for this request is that Chore are investors and private film Companies that are operating in the Area. Last year, films produced in the area contributed apprvximatcly $10 million to the Miami economy; the public television Channel operates in the a►oa, turd in addition, the Downtown Master Plan has identified the OMNI West area as an area to be developed as it filrrdrnuditt district. July 8, 1993 Honorable Mayor and Commissioners City of Miami 3500 Pan American Drive Miami, Fl 33131 Dear Commissioners: The purpose of this letter is to request the City of Miami's designation of a FILM AND MEDIA ARTS DISTRICT in the Edgewater neighborhood. The proposed district's boundaries would be: on the south- NE 17th Street, on the west- No. Miami Ave. to NE 20th Street, then running northeast along the FEC railroad tracts to NE 36th Street and on the east- NE 2nd Ave. The proposed district is in accordance with Policy #1G of the Downtown Master Plan approved by this Commission on October 1989, which encourages the redevelopment of the area with a concentration of media related uses. 0.1-- . 93- 453 2697 Biscayne Boulevard * Miami, FL 33137 * Ph. (EEDC) has been contracted by the City of Miami to work on the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT in the target area of Edgewater, which includes the proposed film and media arts district. EEDC has obtained a Community Development Block Grant for the beautification of NE 2nd Ave. from 17th to 36th Street. At present, there is a 12,000 sq. ft. film studio operating at 2100 NE 2nd Ave. (previously a car dealership); film productions filmed at this location for Italian television have spent approximately $10 million in the last two years. The Film and Media Arts Industry has made the State of Florida the number three (U3 state in the nation from the point of view of number of jobs and production value. 1992 - A total of 14,233 persons were employed in productions having a value of more than $324 million. In 1992, Dade County issued over 1800 Permits for productions with total budgets of almost 84 million. Thus far in 1993, Dade County has issued approximately 1100 Permits for productions with budgets of more than $54 million. An area hotel has reported that for the first half of 1993, their revenues from film and television productions amounts to $190 K. ADVANTAGES/BENEFITS The Edgewater area is only minutes away from downtown Miami, Miami Beach, Bayside Marketplace, Miami International Airport, Miami Seaport and has great access to the Expressway system. Film makers want to come to Florida because it gives them access to the latest technology at affordable prices; they benefit from great weather and they have beautiful areas to work with. The designation and subsequent development of the District will give the area a share of a very large industry that is real, that will create jobs and will increase the positive images of Miami.
