HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-94-0425a-94-533 6/9/94 RESOLUTION NO. _ 9-4 425 A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE WEEK OF JUNE 5 THROUGH JUNE 11, 1994 AS "SAFE BOATING WEEK"; ENCOURAGING ALL BOATING ENTHUSIASTS TO PURSUE SAFE BOATING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO ENSURE THEIR SAFETY ON THE WATERWAYS OF FLORIDA; AND FURTHER URGING ALL CITIZENS TO ACT RESPONSIBLY AND NOT CONSUME ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WHILE ENGAGED IN THE OPERATION OF A VESSEL. WHEREAS, water -related recreational activities are vital elements in the lives of Florida's citizens; and WHEREAS, the State's 8,426 miles of saltwater tidal coastline, over three million acres of inland lakes and 1,700 miles of rivers and streams provide for many of the needed outlets for recreation and relaxation; and WHEREAS, recreational boating is one of Florida's leading outdoor activities with more than four million residents participating in this pastime; and WHEREAS, Florida is the fastest growing recreational boating state in the nation with over 715,000 registered vessels; and WHEREAS, every year lives are lost in boating accidents, due to alcohol, in spite of educational efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons, the Florida Marine Patrol, the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission and local agencies; and CITY COMMISSION MEETINC OF J U N 0 9 1994 Resolution No, 94- 425 WHEREAS, the Florida Marine Patrol, the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons and other cooperating agencies and groups have developed and are now executing campaigns in said field; and WHEREAS, the sponsors of these safety programs have addressed their efforts to the youth and general public of Florida, urging them to enhance boating pleasure and avoid possible loss of life and property damage; NOW, THEREFORE, HE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA: Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The week of June 8 through June 11, 1994 is hereby designated as "Safe Boating Week". Section 3. All boating enthusiasts are hereby encouraged to pursue safe boating educational programs to ensure their safety on the waterways of Florida and all citizens are hereby urged to act responsibly and not consume alcoholic beverages while engaged in the operation of a vessel. 94- 425 -2- i i 1 I Seotion 4. Odio FROM City Manager REFERENCES ENCLOSURES: RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended that a Resolution declaring June 5 through June 11, 1994 as Safe Boating Week, be adopted. BACKGROUND: The Police Department is joining the Florida Marine Patrol in delivering a boating safety message to all the citizens of Florida. Last year 63 boating related fatalities were recorded. This year alone, 12 lives have been lost in boating accidents. With this resolution, the Police Department is showing its support and commitment to making our waterways safer for the boating public. In an effort to get the boating safety message to all the citizens of Florida, I would like to request the support of your city commission in adopting the attached Safe Boating Week Resolution. r While we are asking for your support for this week, we want everyone to realize that they can make a difference every day by obeying boating laws and practicing SAFE, RESPONSIBLE boating.
