WHEREAS, as a Hungarian Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Joseph Cardinal. Mindszenty became a national religious leader, who, during the Soviet control of Hungary, became a strong, outspoken enemy of Communism and defender of religious freedom and human rights; and WHEREAS, for his public statements and actions in defense of the rights of the Hungarian people, he soon found himself the main target of the COImmunist dominated secret police and in 1949 he was arrested, tortured axrd convicted of treason by Hungary's Communist government and given a life sentence; and C= COMMISSION• MEETING OF JAM 2 7 1994 Resolution No. WHEREAS, Cardinal Mindszenty remained under house arrest until 1956, when he was freed by Hungarian rebels during a revolt; and WHO, Caxdiral Mindszenty took refuge in the United States Embassy in Budapest and lived there for 15 years until 1971, when he left Hungary, and at the request of Pope Paul VT, went into exile in Rome (pursuant to an agreement between the Vatioan and the Hungarian Government), and subsequently settled in Vienna; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. R-1665-93, the Boaxd of County C=n ssioners of Dade County, Florida, urged the City of Miami to codesignate Northwest 14th Street from 22nd Avenue to 27th Avenue as "Joseph Cardinal. Mindszenty Street"; and WHEREAS, c=uz noe No. 10761, adopted July 12, 1990, created the Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee and entrusted said Committee with the responsibility of reviewing street oodesignation requests and making recommendations to the City Conmd.ssion in its determination as to whether or not a street should be oodesignated or a masker or plaza should be designated; and WHEREAS, the Miami. Street Codesignation Review Committee, at its meeting of January 26, 1994, reviewed the Administration's proposal for a street oodesignation honoring Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty and rec omxTended against its approval by the City Commission; and WHEREAS, notwithstanding the recommendation made by the Miami. Street Codesignation Review Committee, the City Commission wishes to codesignate Northwest 14th Street from Northwest 22nd. Avenue to Northwest 27th Avenue, Miami., Florida as "Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty Street"; 94_ 47 -2- Section 1. The recitals and fin i.ngs contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if fully set forth in this Section. Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby oodesignates Northwest 14th Street from Northwest 22rri Avenue to Northwest 27th Avenue, Miami., Florida, as "Joseph Caxdin&7. Mindszenty Street". Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Members of the Hoard of County Commissioners of Dade County and Dade County Manager Joaquin Avino. Section 4. The City Manager is hereby directed to instruct the Director of Public Works to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Dade County Public Works Department, the United States Postal Service, and the City of Miami Departments of Police, Fire -Rescue and General Services Administration and Solid Waste. Section 5. This Resolution shaL7. become effective immediately upon its adoption. R-1665-93 RESOLUTION URGING THE CITY OF MIAMI TO CODESIGNATE NW 14 STREET FROM 22ND AVENUE TO 27TH AVENUE AS JOSEPH CARDINAL MINpSZEMY STREET. WHEREAS, Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty was born Joseph Pehm in, Csehimindszenty in 1892. His father was of German ancestry. He was ordained a priest in 1915. During the Nazi occupation of Hungary, he changed his name to indicate his completely Hungarian nationality, using the name of his birthplace. He was named bishop of Veszprem in 1944, and then archbishop of Esztergom ,and Hungarian Prince Primate in 1945. Pope Pius'ill made him a cardinal in February 1946. AND WHEREAS, as Hungarian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty became a national religious leader in Hungary. During the Soviet control of Hungary, he became a strong, outspoken enemy of Communism and defender of religious freedoms and human rights. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY. COMMISSIONERS OF DADE•COUNTx, FLORIDA, that this Board urges the. City of Miami to codesignate NW 14 Street from 22nd Avenue to 27 Avenue as Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty Street. The foregoing resolution was offered by Commissioner Alexander Penelas , who moved its adoption. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Arthur F.
