RESOLUTION NO. 95 38
A RESOLUTION OF THE MIAMI CITY COMMISSION URGING THE
PERFORMING ARTS CENTER TRUST TO FULLY INTEGRATE, AS
FULLY AS POSSIBLE, THE ADAPTIVE RE -USE OF THE HISTORIC
SEARS BUILDING INTO THE METRO-DADE PERFORMING ARTS
CENTER DESIGN SELECTION.
WHEREAS, the Sears, Roebuck and Company Department Store on Biscayne
Boulevard at Northeast 13th Street, Miami, Florida, has been historically

I designated by the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board, and
,i
determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places;
and
WHEREAS, the Sears Building is the first and largest example of Art Deco
I
i
architecture in the City of Miami; and
i
WHEREAS, the Sears Building was deemed fully restorable in 1991 shortly
after its acquisition by Metropolitan Dade County; and
WHEREAS, the Sears Building is an historic component of the urban fabric
that serves as a gateway to the Omni Redevelopment Area, Downtown Miami, the
Port of Miami, Overtown, the Venetian Islands, the MacArthur Causeway and the
City of Miami Beach; and
WHEREAS, the performing arts center complex should be a stellar
accomplishment interweaving the benefits of old and new,

culture and economy, function and aesthetics, performers and audience,

residents and tourists; and
WHEREAS, the Performing Arts Center Trust has selected three
architectural teams expertly capable of preserving the past and envisioning
the future; and
WHEREAS, the three architectural teams stated that the Sears Building
was not an aesthetic problem at a Community Charette; and
WHEREAS, there is significant federal, state, and local funding for

historic preservation;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. The recitals and findings contained in the Preamble to this
Resolution are hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as
i
if fully set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The Miami City Commission hereby urges the Performing Arts
Center Trust to integrate, as fully as possible, the adaptive re -use of the
historic Sears Building into the Metro -Dade Performing Arts Center design
selection.
Section 3. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its
adoption.
