RECOMMENDATION
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the
attached Resolution accepting the donation of four (4) 65-
passenger conventional buses from Dade County Public Schools for
the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of
Police Explorers Program. The legislation would also authorize
the City Manager to execute the necessary documents for this
purpose.
BACKGROUND
The Department of Parks and Recreation is currently facing a
great need in providing transportation services for the many
activities it sponsors throughout the community. This department
was recently advised that the school sized buses that it owns are
no longer operable due to their age. Currently, funding is
unavailable to purchase either new buses or vans. This situation
has greatly impacted this department's ability to provide much
needed programs to our culturally diverse community.
Additionally, in order to have full involvement by the Department
of Police Explorer Program on all activities, the need for a bus
is essential. The anticipated further growth of the Police
Explorer Program and the difficulty experienced in transporting
the Explorers to different functions and activities throughout
the City of Miami, substantiate this need.
Consequently, the City Manager has contacted Dade County Public
Schools for a donation of four (4) surplus school buses, three
(3) buses for the Department of Parks and Recreation and one (1)
bus for the Police Explorer Program.
