ORDINANCE NO. 112 5 7
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING THE ZONING ORDINANCE BY
AMENDING SECTION 401, "SCHEDULE OF DISTRICT
REGULATIONS," G/I GOVERNMENT AND INSTITUTIONAL
ZONING DISTRICT, BY MODIFYING SIGN REGULATIONS;
CONTAINING A REPEALER PROVISION AND A
SEVERABILITY CLAUSE; AND PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Miami Planning Advisory Board, at its meeting of
February 15, 1995, Item No. 4, following an advertised hearing, adopted
Resolution No. PAB 11-95 by a vote of seven to two (7-2), RECOMMENDING
APPROVAL of amending Ordinance No. 11000 as hereinafter set forth; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission after careful consideration of this matter
deems it advisable and in the best interest of the general welfare of the City
of Miami and its inhabitants to amend Ordinance No. 11000 as hereinafter set
forth
NOW�THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED gY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF MIAMI,
FLORIDA:
Section 1. Ordinance No. 11000, as amended, the Zoning Ordinance
of the City of Miami, Florida, is hereby amended by amending the text of said
Ordinance as follows:l/

Underscored words and/or figures shall be added. The
remaining provisions are now in effect and remain unchanged.
Ellipsis and asterisks indicate omitted and unchanged

"ARTICLE 4. ZONING DISTRICTS
Sec. 401. Schedule of district regulations.
G/I Government and Institutional.
Sign Regulations:

Onsite signs only shall be permitted in these districts, subject to
Class II Special Permit procedures and review as set forth in Articles 13 and
].5 of this Ordinance; as well as, the following requirements and limitations.
Except as otherwise provided such signs may be illuminated but shall
not be animated or flashing. At_retail or service establishments, in addition
tb iden fving the principal business, commodity or service, such signs may
devote not more than half of their actual aggregate to the advertising of
subsidiary products sold or services rendered on the premises.
_1_. Construction signs; not to exceed one (1) construction sign or thi
30 square feet in area, for each lot line adjacent to a street.
2. Development signs, except where combined with construction signs, shall
be permissible subject to the provisions as provided at section 925.3.8.
3. Directional signs, which may be combined with address signs but shall
bear no advertising matter, maJy be erected to guide to entrances exits
or parking areas, but shall not exceed five 5 square feet in surface
area.
4. Ground or freestandin signs, limited to one 1 sign structure with not
to exceed two 2 sin surfaces neither of which shall exceed fort 40
square feet in sign area for each establishment or for each fift 50
feet of street frontage. Permitted sign area shall be cumulative, but
no sin surface shall exceed one hundred' 100 square feet. Maximum
height limitation shall be twenty_ 20 Meet including embellishments
measured from the crown of the nearest adjacent local or arterial
street, not including limited access highways or expressways, provided,
however, that the zoning administrator may increase the measurement of
the crown by up to five 5 feet to accommodate unusual or undulating
site conditions upon finding that such conditions exist.

is not limited by these regulations, but aggregate area shall be
included as part of aggregate wall siqn area, as limited above.
Section 2. All ordinances or parts of ordinances insofar as they
are inconsistent or in conflict with the provisions of this Ordinance are
hereby repealed.
Section 3. If any section, part of this section, paragraph,
clause, phrase or word of this Ordinance is declared invalid, the remaining
provisions of this Ordinance shall not be affected.
Section 4. This Ordinance shall become effective thirty (30) days
after final reading and adoption thereof.

Zoning District in order to modify the sign regulations of said district.

BACKGROUND AND
The existing sign regulations for the G/I Government and Institutional Zoning
ANALYSIS
District are as for the 0 Office District, which in turn goes back to the R-4 and
R-3 Residential Districts respectively; upon conducting an analysis of said
regulations, it was determined that the scale of -uses permitted in the G/I District
(which includes hospitals, schools and other such major public facilities) warrants
a different and more expanded type of signage requirements. It is therefore
recommended that the sign regulations for the G/I Zoning District be modified to
read as for the C-1 Restricted Commercial District which is more similar in scale
of facilities.
