BACKGROUND: The Department of Parks and Recreation recommend the renaming of Flagler Mini Park to the "Bay of Pigs Memorial Park". The Miami Street Codesignation Review Committee recommended approval of the codesignation of the subject streets contingent upon the renaming of the Park. On April 1961, an event of great magnitude and importance to the United States of America unfolded. This event is historically known as the "Bay of Pigs" invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles and American service men. Although, the invasion was not successful it depicted the patriotism and heroism of both Cuban exiles and American soldiers. Later, that year the Unites States was engaged with the Soviet Union in what was known as the Cuban Missile Crisis. Construction of Missiles Launch sites by the Soviets were discovered in various locations in the island of Cuba. The renaming of this Park and codesignation of five surrounding streets is being proposed by an organization named the Committee to Rescue the Cuban Historical Roots & Monuments in the World. If approved by the City Commission, this organization will be responsible for all costs associated with this matter. This action is proposed and recommended by the Parks and Recreation Department in an effort to honor the rich heritage of the United States and the memory of brave Americans that died as a result of the historical event known as the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis and for the cause of the liberation of Cuba. The codesignation of the surrounding streets are listed in the attached memorandum to the City Clerk in connection with the placement of the advertisement for a scheduled public hearing on this matter for the City Commission Meeting of December 12, 1996. 1 - U r 0 CITY OF MIAMI, FLORIDA INTER -OFFICE MEMORANDUM TO Walter J.
