RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission
adopt the attached Resolution authorizing the City Manager
to accept a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency(EPA) for a Regional Brownfields Pilot in the amount
of $100,000.
BACKGROUND:
The City of Miami was awarded a regional Brownfields
Demonstration Pilot on June 13, 1996. Brownfields are
abandoned pieces of land - usually in inner cities -• that
have real or perceived contamination from previous
industrial use. Because of the stigma of contamination and
legal barriers to redevelopment, businesses do not buy the
land and sites remain unproductive and vacant. The pilot
provides seed money to promote economic development the way
the community believes it will work best. The pilot is a
two year planning grant, beginning October 1, 1996. The
pilot will result in a community -based strategy for cleaning
up area(s) in Wynwood that have been unable to attract
investors for commercial/industrial redevelopment.
It is therefore recommended that the attached Resolution be
adopted by the City Commission to authorize the City Manager
to accept this grant from the U.S. EPA.
