RESOLUTION NO. 9 6 " 521
A RESOLUTION, ACCEPTING A GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF
$500,000 FROM THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF STATE,
DIVISION OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS, FOR THE REHABILITATION
OF THE TOWER THEATER LOCATED IN "LITTLE HAVANA";
FURTHER AUTHORIZING THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE
AN AGREEMENT, IN A FORM ACCEPTABLE TO THE CITY
ATTORNEY, WITH THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF STATE FOR
THIS PURPOSE.
WHEREAS, the City of Miami, pursuant to Resolution No. 93-242, adopted April 15,
1993, authorized the City Manager to execute an Agreement with the firm of Bermello, Ajamil &
Partners, Inc., to design and provide construction supervision services for the Tower Theater
Rehabilitation Project, ("the Project"); and
WHEREAS, in an effort to obtain additional funding for the Project, the Department of
Community Planning and Revitalization, Development Division, prepared and submitted a grant
application to the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, 1996-1997
Cultural Facilities Program; and
WHEREAS, said grant will provide for the interior renovation of the Theater consisting
of the construction of two screen cinema spaces, small stage, a welcome/interpretive center and
the refurbishing of mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems and the installation of an elevatior,
cinema and stage equipment; and

WHEREAS, during its 1996 session, the Florida Legislature appropriated said amount for
this Project of the City of Miami; and
WHEREAS, it is necessary that the City Commission authorize the City Manager to
accept the grant and execute an Agreement, in a form acceptable to the City Attorney, to utilize
the grant for the Project;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
MIAMI, FLORIDA:
Section L The recital and findings contained in the Preamble to this Resolution are
hereby adopted by reference thereto and incorporated herein as if frilly set forth in this Section.
Section 2. The City Manager is hereby authorized to accept a grant in the amount of
$500,000 from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, for the
rehabilitation of the Tower Theater located in Little Havana.
Section 3. The City Manager is hereby authorized'/ to execute a grant agreement, in a
form acceptable to the City Attorney, for the acceptance and disbursement of said grant.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
The herein authorization is further subject to compliance with all requirements that may
be imposed by the City Attorney, including but not limited to those prescribed by
applicable City Charter and Code provisions.

RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that the City Commission adopt the attached Resolution to accept
a grant in the amount of $ 500,000 from the Florida Department of State, Division of Cultural
Affairs. The Grant is to be used for the rehabilitation of the Historic Tower Theater located in
Little Havana. The Resolution further authorizes the City Manager to execute an agreement, in a
form acceptable to the City Attorney, for the implementation of the project and the disbursement
of the moneys to the City.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Community Planning and Revitalization (CPR) recommends the adoption of
the attached Resolution in order to be able to restore the Tower Theater. Funds in the amount of
$500,000 were awarded to the City for this project by the State of Florida, Division of Cultural
Affairs, under a highly competitive grant process. This grant was additionally approved by the
j State Legislature.

This funding will be utilized for the interior renovation of the Tower Theater. The renovation
will convert the existing auditorium from a one screen to a two screen cinema space. The larger
cinema includes a small stage equipped with lighting and dressing room space. Additionally,
this grant will fund the refurbishing of all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, life -safety systems,
installation of cinema and stage equipment and seating as well as the installation of an elevator
for ADA compliance.
